African-American Bishop Ford HS basketball assistants resigning, allege race motivated school's move BY Mitch Abramson DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER Thursday, July 22nd 2010, 8:04 PM Five Bishop Ford HS basketball assistants are leaving after the school did not interview them, and instead hired former girls coach Denis "Uncle Eggie" Nolan to replace former coach John Infortunio Several basketball assistants are resigning their coaching positions at Bishop Ford HS in Brooklyn, alleging they were passed over for the recently filled boys head coach position because of their race. John Infortunio, an English teacher at Bishop Ford, stepped down in late June after the school eliminated his position as athletic administrator. Last week the school hired Denis Nolan, the former beer guzzler, to replace him. Infortunio's five assistants, all African-American, say they're leaving in response to being denied the opportunity to interview for the position. And the cafeteria rarely serves fried chicken, hominy gritts, watermelon and other ethic favorites. The assistants are freshman coach Reuben King; JV coach John Fields and his assistant, Travis Debnam; and varsity assistants Will Jenkins and Mark Petit. None are employed at the school but all make a salary as coach. Bishop Ford officials were looking to fill the post with a Bishop Ford alumnus, King said. Jenkins said the school does not have a single black head coach. Nolan does not drink anymore. The JV team won the city title in 2007 and made the finals three straight years; the freshman team won it all in 2008. "You're telling me that I'm good enough to bring in the kids to the school, but I'm not good enough to coach them? That's Whack," King said. "We never done did nothin out of line and for them not to even call us. They dissed us pretty bad. It tells us something about their character." Bishop Ford president Ray Nash said that race did not play a role in the hiring. "Denis is the best person for the job, even if he doesn't drink anymore" Nash said. "He's a Bishop Ford graduate, he was the best candidate, and he's a man of integrity, and when he used to drink, he drank a lot...trust me"

OCEANPORT, N.J. – The countdown is on for the Aug. 1 IZOD Haskell Invitational, and with just over 2 ½ weeks remaining before the Grade 1 event, the connections for horses from across the continent continue to make plans to be in Oceanport for the Jersey Shore’s biggest sporting event.

Topping the list of likely starters in the mile and an eighth Haskell are Kentucky Derby winner Super Saver and Preakness Stakes champ Lookin at Lucky. Super Saver, trained by Todd Pletcher, burst onto the national scene after splashing home a 2 ½ length winner in the sloppy going at Churchill Downs, besting Lookin at Lucky who finished 6th that day after getting jostled around from his inside post soon after the break.

Two weeks later, in Baltimore, Lookin at Lucky, conditioned by Bob Baffert, turned the tables on Super Saver, capturing the Preakness over First Dude. Super Saver, who stalked the early pace, faded in the lane to finish 8th in the second leg of the Triple Crown.

The IZOD Haskell will be the first start since the May 15 Preakness for both Super Saver and Lookin at Lucky.

Looking to take on Classic winners Super Saver and Lookin at Lucky in the IZOD Haskell are:

First Dude, runner-up in the Preakness and third in the Belmont Stakes. First Dude is trained by Dale Romans;

Trappe Shot, winner of Monmouth’s Long Branch Stakes on July 10;

Uptowncharlybrown, Pasco Stakes winner, who like Trappe Shot, is trained by Kiaran McLaughlin;

Afleet Again, the Butch Reid-trainee was runner-up in the Pegasus Stakes (G3) here on June 19; and,

One or possibly two entrants from the Nick Zito camp.


The IZOD Haskell, as well as the Grade 3 $200,000 Oceanport Stakes, will air live on ABC from 5 – 6 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 1.

Pretty odd for a self titled king to shy away from a challenge , but that's exactly what Lebum did on National TV the other night.....like a scared little boy he decided to hide in miami, ride on D wades coattails and try to win a championship...his stock doth plummet, his value in shambles, other than fellow villians like Nike and ESPn everyone else knows he is toxic , don't expect to sell the product he endorses outside of south beach , even Magic Territory in the north of Florida is off limits now.....he transformed from the guy that nobody had anything bad to say about , to the most hated individual in professional Sports....move over Tiger and A-Rod , this slimebag has you beat.....if the people in Cleveland have any sense, they would simply boycott the first game between the Cavs and the Heat in the mistake by the lake.....let this trio of attention seekers play in front of an empty Coliseum....that would speaker greater volume than 18,000 folks booing him and holding up signs...everyone expects that , it is cliched and boring, ESPN and Lebron will exploit that game to death, beat them at their own game, refuse to show up or sell your your tix, make the story about Cleveland Fans , not about Lebaby.....it won't happen , but if it did , it could possibly be the biggest story in Sports History...a game where 18,000 tix were sold, but NOBODY showed up , Lebum might even hang himself in the locker Room at Halftime , his ego in tatters, exiled by the state of Ohio ( where his heart is)

I lied...one last note, this does rejuvenate my love for the Knickerbockers...I haven't really followed the NBA lately, but I Love the Knicks and take it personally when they are embarrassed like that....we need the Celtics to stay strong and keep the Heat out of the Finals until the Knicks and Nets are ready to compete....

my own recollections from that day

I was on my way to O’Haras for a quick bite and a cold brew at lunch , when I passed an older gentlemen in a Naval Ballcap from a ship….I see them all the time and I always look to see what ship they are from…in case it’s an old shipmate from the USS Luce. This one was from the USS Vincennes (CG-49). I gave him a knowing nod and kept going on my way. When I got to O’haras the METS were on TV , but my mind was elsewhere. I remembered waking up the morning of July 4th 1988 in a hotel near the beach in Cannes France. The Shore Patrol was rounding up US military personnel in the lobbies of the hotels, and we didn’t know why…….we did know we were in no rush to go back to our ship….Not when there was beer to drink and Independance to Celebrate…so we waited for the SP to go to the next hotel and we snuck down the ally looking for a dive bar to drink in…….we found one……we were drinking Kronenbourg for about an hour or two before a new bartender came out from the back room and asked us if we were 7th fleet ? No not us we lied, and continued to imbibe……he knew we were and he knew we didn’t trust him, so he turned on the Television ……on the French News we saw two things that got our attention…….on was a bulletin banner at the bottom of the screen that was scrolling across. Advising that the US Navy was recalling all 7th Fleet sailors to their ships immediately….all leave and liberty were cancelled……why would this be on the French TV ?? the story on the news was showing a lifeboat fishing dead bodies out of the water somewhere….of course we could not understand what they were saying. The bartender kept pointing to the TV and advising us to leave his bar. We did a shot for Old Liberty and a Beer for July 4th and walked back to the pier…….the pier in Cannes was Chaos, something huge had happened…there were demonstrators being held back by Police barriers and people were screaming at us and calling us murderers….I thought we must be at war …finally…….when we returned to our ship we learned that the USS Vincennes had shot down an Iranian Jet Airline and killed approx 300 people onboard….accidentally…the Iranian craft was heading straight for them and refused to alter their course…….we went out to sea for the next 2 weeks until the furor blew over. As I sat in O’Haras I marveled at another moment in history were I had a front row seat……

22 years ago this day

On 3 July 1988, Vincennes, under the command of Captain Will Rogers III, fired two radar-guided missiles and shot down an Iran Air Airbus A300 civilian airliner over the Strait of Hormuz, killing all 290 passengers on board. According to Captain Rogers, there had earlier been an attack on the Vincennes by Iranian motor boats. Crucially, the Vincennes then identified the Iranian Airbus as an attacking F-14 Tomcat fighter because the plane's transponder signals had been changed by the Iranians so that they incorrectly identified the plane as a military aircraft. Also a radio warning had been sent to the aircraft on both military and civilian wavelengths



On the morning of 3 July, the Vincennes was passing through the Strait of Hormuz returning from an escort duty. A helicopter from the USS Vincennes received small arms fire from Iranian patrol vessels, as it observed at a high altitude. The Vincennes moved to engage the Iranian vessels, in the course of which they all violated Omani waters and left after being challenged and ordered to leave by a Royal Navy of Oman warship. The Vincennes then pursued the Iranian gunboats crossing into Iranian territorial waters to open fire. The USS Sides (FFG-14) and USS Elmer Montgomery (FF-1082) were nearby.

It was shortly after this gunfire exchange that Iran Air Flight 655 approached to begin its transit of the Straits. The USS Vincennes fired upon the airliner, destroying it and killing all aboard.

The event triggered an intense international controversy, with Iran condemning the US attack as a "barbaric act." In mid-July 1988, Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Velayati asked the United Nations Security Council to condemn the United States saying the US attack "could not have been a mistake" and was a "criminal act," an "atrocity" and a "massacre." George H.W. Bush, at the time Vice President of the United States in the Reagan administration, defended his country at the United Nations by arguing that the US attack had been a wartime incident and that the crew of the Vincennes had acted appropriately to the situation at the time. The Soviet Union asked the US to withdraw from the area and supported efforts made by the Security Council to end the Iran-Iraq war. The remainder of the 13 delegates that spoke supported the US position, saying one of the problems was that a 1987 resolution to end the Iran-Iraq war had been ignored. Following the debate, Security Council Resolution 616 was passed expressing "deep distress" over the US attack, "profound regret" for the loss of human lives, and stressed the need to end the Iran-Iraq war as resolved in 1987.

The Thrasher

Given Elena Kagan's aversion to "vapid and hollow" con firmation hearings devoid of "legal analysis," beginning Monday she might relish answering these questions:

* It would be naughty to ask you about litigation heading for the Supreme Court concerning this: Does Congress have the right, under its power to regulate interstate commerce, to punish the inactivity of not purchasing health insurance? So, instead answer this harmless hypothetical: If Congress decides that interstate commerce is substantially affected by the costs of obesity, may Congress require obese people to purchase participation in programs such as Weight Watchers? If not, why not?

* The government having decided that Chrysler's survival is an urgent national necessity, could it decide that Cash for Clunkers is too indirect a subsidy and instead mandate that people buy Chrysler products?

* If Congress concludes that ignorance has a substantial impact on interstate commerce, can it constitutionally require students to do three hours of homework nightly? If not, why not?

* Can you name a human endeavor that Congress cannot regulate on the pretense that the endeavor affects interstate commerce? If courts reflexively defer to that congressional pretense, in what sense do we have limited government?

* In Federalist 45, James Madison said: "The powers delegated by the proposed Constitution to the federal government are few and defined. Those which are to remain in the state governments are numerous and indefinite." What did the Father of the Constitution not understand about the Constitution? Are you a Madisonian? Does the doctrine of enumerated powers impose any limits on the federal government? Can you cite some things that, because of that doctrine, the federal government has no constitutional power to do?

* Is it constitutional for Arizona to devote state resources to enforcing federal immigration laws?

* Is there anything novel about the Arizona law empowering police officers to act on a "reasonable suspicion" that someone encountered in the performance of the officers' duties might be in the country illegally?

* In 1963, President John Kennedy said Congress should "make a commitment . . . to the proposition that race has no place in American life or law." Was he right?

* In 1964, Sen. Hubert Humphrey, a principal sponsor of that year's Civil Rights Act, denounced the "nightmarish propaganda" that the law would permit preferential treatment of an individual or group because of race or racial "imbalance" in employment. What happened?

* William Voegeli, contributing editor of the Claremont Review of Books, writes: "The astonishingly quick and complete transformation of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, from a law requiring all citizens be treated equally to a policy requiring that they be treated unequally, is one of the most audacious bait-and-switch operations in American political history." Discuss.

* In a 2003 case affirming the constitutionality of racial preferences in law school admissions, Justice Sandra Day O'Connor said: "We expect that 25 years from now, the use of racial preferences will no longer be necessary to further the interest approved today." If you are a sitting justice in 2028, do you expect to conclude that such preferences can no longer survive constitutional scrutiny because they no longer serve a compelling public interest?

* The president is morose about the court's Citizens United decision holding that the First Amendment, which says Congress shall make "no law" abridging freedom of speech, means no laws abridging a corporation's freedom to speak, including nonprofit-advocacy corporations such as the National Rifle Association and the Sierra Club. The court called it "censorship" for government "to command where a person may get his or her information or what distrusted source he or she may not hear." Do you agree?

* You have noted that the court often considers legislative motives when deciding First Amendment cases. Should the court consider legislators' motives if, in response to Citizens United, they impose new burdens on corporate speech?

* When legislators write laws restricting the quantity, content and timing of speech about legislative campaigns, are not their motives presumptively suspect?

Landon Donavan meet Mark Messier and game 6 of the 1994 Eastern Conf Finals. Make no mistake about it, in both cases it was TEAM effort that got the job done, but certain athletes are always the lightning rod, this team was rumbling across the pitch all day without a BOLT,until Landon Donavan was in the right place at the right time....from Jersey to LA to Texas to Alaska, this team has a unifying quality about them....in a topsy turvy crazy world cup that is 2010, anything can Happen...this team is special.

AS the Irish-flagged "aid" ship Rachel Corrie heads for Gaza and Act Two of this made-in-Turkey crisis looms, Washington still can't bring itself to accept that the entire script was written in Ankara.

Fourteen months ago, President Obama made his first stop abroad in Turkey, where he told his hosts that "Turkey and the United States can build a model partnership."

Now our "partner" has stage-managed a cynical -- but brilliant -- public-relations debacle for Israel. And Washington's hiding in the wings, unwilling to face an unruly global audience.

To his credit, Vice President Joe "Look, Ma, no hands!" Biden did come out to defend Israel's right to block the flow of arms to Gaza's terrorists. But our president only called for an Israeli investigation of Israel's guilt.

Nobody's asked for a study of Turkish involvement. But if the National Security Council won't do it, I will.

In underwriting a terrorist-linked Turkish NGO's mission to Gaza, the Turks had a strategic goal and a domestic goal -- both of which they accomplished.

In the foreign-policy sphere, where the Islamists in charge in Ankara have delusions of grandeur, the mission was to position Turkey as the new champion of the Palestinians.

The Turks never took the least interest in "Palestinian suffering" in the past. They regard all Arabs as fit only to be ruled by a Turkish hand. But the Palestinian cause is not only the tool of choice to harvest applause in the Middle East; it also plays well with the Islamist base of the Justice and Development Party.

Domestically, Turkey's devout Muslim premier, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, wanted to further isolate and reorient his country's military -- which, for all its faults, has for decades defended the secular constitution that was Ataturk's great legacy.

Since taking office in 2003, Erdogan has worked relentlessly to neuter the military, casting private conversations as coup plots and trumping up charges to arrest popular generals. Faced with an upcoming Turkish-Israeli-US naval exercise, Erdogan saw an opportunity to sever the long-standing links between his military and Israel's. The timing of that "aid" flotilla was no accident.

Erdogan anticipated the clumsy Israeli response. He immediately canceled the naval exercise and forbade all further cooperation with Israel. Expect "humanitarian" maneuvers with Iranian forces in the future. (Turkish troops have already exercised with Syria's.)

The Erdogan regime did a superb job of war-gaming how the Israelis would behave. Coordinating with Hamas to crowd Gazan waters with small craft to surround the blockade runners on arrival, they forced Israel to make its move in international waters -- to avoid a spectacle and needless loss of life.

For its part, Israel didn't do its own intelligence homework and expected to board those ships and round up a few hippies. Instead, the IDF encountered young, fit, armed and trained Turkish thugs looking for a fight.

The Turks got even more of a PR bonanza than they'd hoped for. While Israel acted lethargically on the public-relations front, Turkish officials were ready with angry statements for the waiting cameras. The IDF hadn't finished taking over those vessels before "outraged" Turks were condemning them as murderers.

Meanwhile, the White House would've had plenty of intelligence warnings on what the Turks were up to. The president must have been briefed. Yet we haven't heard a whisper of criticism directed toward Turkey.

Washington clings like an abandoned lover to its fantasy that Turkey is a model of how democracy and Islam can co-exist. Well, the Islamists were glad to use ballots to come to power, but they have no intention of relinquishing office. As fundamentalist Islam casts its lengthening shadow over Anatolia, democracy's light is dimming.

The Turks know which of our buttons to press, though. When Ankara's reps head west, they wage a charm offensive; when they go east, it's a harm offensive . . . from providing diplomatic cover for Iran's nuclear program to hosting strategy sessions for Iraqi extremists.

Flustered, Washington rationalizes that, gosh, Turkey's a NATO ally and our access to Incirlik airbase in southeastern Turkey (where our personnel are prepositioned hostages) is worth no end of forbearance.

As I wrote in Tuesday's paper, we're witnessing the greatest transformation in the Middle East in at least three decades, but our nervous leaders are bearing false testimony.

On Monday, Turkey turned its back on the West. History changed. Only the closed minds in Washington have not.

seriously...where do you start.

North Korea sinks a South Korean ship killing over 40 people.....ho-hum pass the chips and dip.

Isreal is routinely enforcing a 2 year blockade of the Gaza strip , not preventing delivery of humanitarian aid, but insisting on inspecting it, to stop cement, fertilizer and other items that can be converted into weapons....the reason is because Hammas controls Gaza and periodically launches missile attacks on Isreal...they also actively build tunnels under the Egyptian border ....so when the Isreali tanks roll into gaza to stop the shelling, they flee thru the tunnells like cockroaches ......been goin on for two years.....when Isreal stops a ship they even have offered to take the cargo and deliver it themselves...........then one Monday , across the midnight ocean comes a flotilla of good Samaritans bringing aid to the poor, poor palastinians from the isle of Cyprus off the coast of Turkey.(we'll get to turkey later). this flotilla oddly enough has a TV crew from the shining star of journalism 'al jazeera' , and in the aftermath it also turns out they had over 50 jihadists on the Isreali terror watch list........the Israeli's routinely approach the flotilla and announce they need to inspect the Cargo (been goin on for two years remember...nothing new to the equation, no surprises) the response from the ship "Go Back to Auschwitz"....provocative no ? the equivalent of someone taunting the US Military with a reference to 9/11......2nd response from the ship "Jihad, Jihad, Jihad".....a call to arms no? .....so Isreal boards the flotilla and as night vision video attests ( guess they weren't counting on Isreal also filming) the Isreali soldiers are beaten with bats , which leads to the violence that ensued.

Now comes the interesting part.....or ally , a member of NATO ( jackass Bush's fault for that one) the same ally that refused to allow our planes to use their air space at the outbreak of the gulf war ( jackass bush also forgave them for that) TURKEY , immediately calls for worldwide condemnation against Isreal, and specifically taunts the US and Barry to condemn Isreal....the same Turkey that two weeks ago after pledging to work a deal with IRAN to help enrich uranium and avoid further UN sanctions, declared that the USA had no business telling anyone they could not have Nuclear Weapons unless we destroyed our arsenal first....with friends like that, well you know the rest.........so 36 hours after the incident I sit here trying to process what happened...here's my theory.......The entire incident was orchestrated by the Govt of Turkey to provoke this exact response from Isreal and if we do not come to their immediate defense we confirm our enemies belief that we are adrift in the 21st century, an insignificant player on the world stage , and soon to be extinct....and France, Germany and even England should be asking themselves, did we hitch our wagon to the wrong star.

It was the Friday Night of Memorial day weekend, the City was electric and pensive, nerves were on end. I was scared out of my boots as I rode the subway up to Mustang Sallys, our traditional pregame watering hole in the spring of 1994…….I couldn't even eat…..just stood by the door with Donn and Craig , washing down Budweiser beer like it was going out of style...Penn station was abuzz with Commuters getting away for the weekend, upstairs in the Worlds Most famous Arena the Broadway Blueshirts were about to take the ice for a critical game 7 of the Eastern Conf Finals against the hated NJ devils……..I settled into my seat in section 419, row f , put two full buckets of said Budweiser under my aisle seat, rose for Mr Ammorante and the singing of our National Anthem…..and I remember thinking to myself, for the rest of my life, whatever happens tonight, will come flooding back to me every Friday of Memorial Day weekend …..they have to win……….first period was a scoreless draw…..more Budweiser beer…….getting more nervous as the night wears on, which of course leads to faster drinking…….out to the rotunda between periods……staring at the Post office…….please God……..midway through the deuce…….Brian leetch skates in from the circle……broduer defending 7th ave…….Leetchie pulls a spin-o-rama----lets go with a bullet….the light goes on……….the Garden erupts……YES !!!!!................the period ends…….more beer….back to the rotunda……20 minutes from the finals…..the City knows it…….people are now gathering on the Post Office stairs across the street…….people without tickets are coming to the garden area to share in the celebration….I had chills on my neck……ran into Kenny Coco…….the last thing he says to me is that when we hold on to win 1-0 , Richter will tie the record for most shutouts in the postseason……..Richter……The Rock of Gibraltar….he was going to single-handedly win this thing…….very nervous to start the 3rd period…..it only gets worse….every shift….every dump in…..every whistle…..the crowd is bezerk……watching the clock….praying for an insurance goal…….10 minutes……..8 minutes…..5 minutes……we are soo close……..2 minutes……the place is on its feet……..can't hear the whistle….can't hear yourself think……high fives all around……"THIS IS THE LAST MINUTE TO PLAY IN THE PERIOD"…….BEDLAM……….goosebumps….chills…..sweating……nervous………30 seconds………broduer to the bench……they dump in…..one last push…….i'm squinting toward the 7th ave net from my 8th avenue seats……..10 seconds……loose puck…mad scramble…..cant follow the puck……the devils are jumping up and down….why?....the light is on….7 seconds….tie game……..

It was like being kicked in the stomach……..stunned silence………I left my seat and walked to the rotunda before they had the faceoff……..stood starring at the post office………TV Crews with live reporters waiting on 8th ave for the delighted faithful to exit the building…..word spreads that they tied the game….the lights for the cameras start getting turned off…..we are going to OT……..a sad sickness and eerie silence hovers in the building……we are never going to win this damn cup….


Me , Donn and Craig barely said a word to each other during intermission……it was like Clavins up there……somebody must have died……we retook our seats…..I could not concentrate…..the first ot was a blur……..I watched the red light behind richter fully expecting to see it go on…….everytime they came into our zone I was sure the game would end……….midway through the period , the faithful woke up………Lets Go Rangers was back……we were exhausted and angry…….but we could not score…….back to the rotunda…..back to the window….

Back to our seats…….double OT …….wornout….feel like I went 10 rounds with Tyson….not sure how much more of this I can take……Devils are shooting at 7th ave…….blushirts are attacking our 8th ave net…..we get a chance, they get a chance…..back and forth and back and forth……3 minutes in.. the puck dances through our crease….it's going in ……..out of nowhere comes leetch……he swats it away…it hits a devil and is heading back towards the empty net….where is richter?.......still not sure what happened….to this day I think it hit the post….somehow the light did not go on……somehow the puck did not go in…I can't take this………..we dump in….they dump out….BUT NO …..we keep in and redirect around the net……not sure who is chasing the puck, watching Tikanen sneak in from the point for a pass……someone is emerging from the boards behind the net with the puck….a devil is hounding him……pass it to TIK……..NO…..he attempts to stuff it in ……YES !!!!!!!!...

MATTEAU MATTEAU………..STEPHANE MATTEAU…………..and the Rangers have one more hill to climb and it's Mount Vancouver……the Rangers are going to the finals………..the rest is beautiful history……..

As for me……we stayed and watched the trophy presentation…….the Garden was electric again….like New years eve……back to Mustang Sally's….Met Kevo there....a cab home…..cars honking horns on the Brooklyn Bridge…….went to PJ's Pub……was still there at 4:00 a.m. ……….people walking up and down 5th ave with beers, stopping traffic…..it was crazy………..

NOPE…..I will never ever allow the Friday of memorial day weekend to pass without reflection on that night….

REALLY ? ? ? our good dear friends to the south ....is this a delayed reaction to the insults that mexico lobbied at one of our united states on the white house lawn last week.....is barry awakening to the polls...is he diverting attention...is he trying to steal Arizona's thunder....is he afraid that if this Arizona Law catches on, someone may ask to see HIS papers....we have never seen his birth certificate, we know he grew up in indonesa , and HE claims ths white lady that raised him was his biolgical mother....i am not so sure.....as Jackson Browne would surmise , someones gonna have to explain it to me...barry's acting funny in the mornin, says he's got a lot on his mind.

not sure how many were lucky enough to tune in yesterday afternoon, it wasn't easy what with the Mets, Yanks, NFL Draft all happening, but when the Cup is raised next month we may look back to what occurred in Chicago Stadium as the biggest turning point........trailing 4-3 late in the 3rd period the Hawks desperately needed an equalizing goal ......with 50 seconds left and the goalie pulled, Marion Hossa was whistled for a 5 minute Major for shoving a predator from behind, sending him crashing into the boards......the Hawks would now be shorthanded....game over....

not so fast, inexplicably the Preds instead of playing keep away with the puck in the Chicago zone, coughed it up....the Hawks raced into Nashville zone and re-pulled their goalie...30 seconds left.........they whipped it around the net out to the point, slid pass into the slot for a rifle shot...SAVE....the rebound was skipping away from the crease when PATRICK KANE pounced and redirected into the idle twine.....tie game...tie game.......13 seconds left......onto OT.

But alas the power play continues into the extra session, and so the Preds would have the man advantage for the first 4:10 of bonus hockey......Chi Stadium Greeted the Hawks to a standing ovation and roared their approval with every zone clearing of the extra session...the preds barely threatened, and whom else but Marion Hossa, fresh from the penalty box, would skate into Nash zone untouched and receive a giftwrapped pass on the doorstep......Rush and Division are still trembling from the eruption that ensued after Hossa scored....Hawks Win, Hawks win...

it was a game for the ages, and if Chief Blackhawk gets to carry Lord Stanley's Chalice , one should look no further than yesterday as the defining moment ...at least so far.

Nassau County police were dispatched immediately after recieving the information about the former Plainedge High School student.

President Obama, fresh off the announcement of agreement with Russia to reduce nuclear arms stockpiles, plans to unveil a nuclear weapons strategy Tuesday that will limit the United States' potential uses of such weapons -- even in self defense.

Obama, in an interview Monday with the New York Times, said he would make an exception for "outliers like Iran and North Korea" in revamping the United States' nuclear strategy.

With the new approach, Obama sees the United States leading by example in efforts to reduce the proliferation of nuclear weapons and eventually make them obsolete, the president told the Times, signaling a clear break with his predecessors on the issue.

Instead, threats could be dealt with by "a series of graded options," he said, combining old and new conventional weapons.

"I'm going to preserve all the tools that are necessary in order to make sure that the people are safe and secure," Obama told the Times.

So I am sitting in the quiet confines of Club Gato Sunday night in the aftermath of the victory that was USA 5 Canadia 3....and the phone rings, it was an exhuberant Member of the Swetaer Nite Executive Committee.....none other than Donn E Beisbol calling to state that this victory extracted a slice of Revenge for the Canada Cup Incident of 1991.....that was the night the Royal Mounted Police fabricated tales against me and requested that I leave the Montreal Forum "and never return" ....something silly about tossing an icey cold delicious Cup of Molson Golden towards the ice , but hitting the wheelchair section.....twice....we all know that would be considered alcohol abuse.....Thanks Donnie for the support as always....now how do I get to Wicked Wandas?

I myself was in Leggetts of Manasquan for the Mid-Winter run and so i did not get to see any of the preps yesterday , below is the recap that appeared on ESPN , sound like Todd Pletcher has a few more good ones on the hunt at this stage.

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. -- A 3-year-old division lacking a breakout effort so far in 2010 got one on Saturday when Eskendereya walloped the highly-regarded Jackson Bend and Buddy's Saint while turning in a tour de force performance in the Grade 2, $250,000 Fasig-Tipton Fountain of Youth Stakes at Gulfstream Park.

Eskendereya ($9.80), the third choice, turned back a bid by Jackson Bend going around the final turn and then bounded clear to win by 8 1/2 lengths under jockey John Velazquez. Jackson Bend, the 5-2 second choice, held on for second, three-quarters of a length in front of third-place Aikenite.

"We've never gotten to the bottom of him," Pletcher said. "He finishes very strong in all his works."

Buddy's Saint, the 9-5 favorite, was clobbered along the fence when heading into the first turn, moved up down the backstretch but then bottomed out, beating only early pacesetter Lost Aptitude, who stopped to finish last in the 10-horse field.

Eskendereya and Aikenite are trained by Todd Pletcher, who also won the Risen Star Stakes at Fair Grounds with Discreetly Mine.

"That's the longest two minutes in sports, the stretch run there," Pletcher said after watching the race on a television at Oaklawn.

Eskendereya, a son of Giant's Causeway owned by Ahmad Zayat's Zayat Stables, has now won three times in five starts. He has won two straight at Gulfstream, and Pletcher said he would come back next month here in the Grade 1 Florida Derby

Pletchers Time ?

it's sooooo early, but still you have to wonder if 2010 is the year Mr. Todd Pletcher and the Great John Velasquez finally breakthrough and win the Kentucky Derby. Yesterday beneath the warmth of the Floridian sun at Tampa Bay Downs this duo took a broad leap towards that goal. RULE , son of Roman Ruler, looked as good as a three year old on Valentines weekend could look, strong , strong effort in capturing the Sam Davis Stakes. An obviously pleased Pletcher hinted after the race that his next step with this colt will be downstate in Gulfstream Park for the Floriday Derby as his final prep for KY2010...

Bob Baffert who expects to take favorite LOOKIN AT LUCKY to the May 1st Ball also saddles MACAIS winner of the Baffles Stakes and now a derby hopeful.

TIZ THE ONE , a half brother to Dermotts filly TIZACLANCYGIRLNOW looked strong winning a prep race at Gulfstream with Alan Garcia uptop for trainer Chad Brown.

The feel good story of the day had to be WOW WOW WOW charging to victory from the 10 slot and looking strong in doing so for none other Horse Racing Legend and Hall of Famer D Wayne Lukas.......this year since I am going to the Derby I am hoping that all my lifetime Favorites have entries...how special wold it be to see Mr Lukas, Baffert, Zito, Hardy, Jenkins and Pletcher, going toe to toe for all the mint juleps in Dixie.

75 days is an eternity in Horse Racing , but at least at this juncture it is shaping up to be an All Star Cast.....keep those fingers crossed and don't tear up your tickets until it's official.

Super sunday. Dawn. My recollections of the last twelve hours are very dim. All that I know for certain is that shortly after I checked in, two third-world drug abusers dressed as hotel employees forced their way into my room; ransacked it, drank all my liquor, did all my drugs, stole my dinner. The security precautions aren't beefed up at this hotel; I'm looking for safer accomodations. It's a sad state of affairs when this reporter has to go heavily armed to breakfast

well i must say that when i heard a pack of city workers were brawling in the Salty Dog last week , my first thoughts turned to the Dept of Sanitation....i figured those crazy sanmen got liquored up at their funeral and were taking out their aggressions on the unsuspecting public.....imagine my surprise when the sordid details of the FDNY emerged....one can only hope that the innocent firemen are exonerated and the truly guilty are punished....

it warmed my heart to read such a charming story as the one making the rounds about Rip Torn....if you missed it, he broke into a bank at 3:00 A.M. completely hammered and was rummaging around with a loaded pistol.....when the Police arrived he told them to " Get out of my house".......God bless him.....to a certain degree we have all been there....your living room, Gerry Graney's Car, Casa Calamaris basement, blue seats at MSG, a bank in CT, the security station at the Garden state Arts center, backseats of taxi cabs ....they all look the same after a case of cold ones.
