and the beat goes on

i am jealous....I wish I had thought of this prank months/years ago....but even I am not that clever, once again in a story that only appears to be happening on Fox News, comes proof that "real life" is more incredible, creative and hilarious than fiction ever can be.

The National Organization for Women finally stepped up Tuesday to slam Bill Maher for calling Sarah Palin a female vulgarism after first declining to comment on the matter.

A NOW rep told FOXNews.com early Tuesday it was a “known fact” that NOW does not correspond with FOX News after being contacted for comment regarding Bill Maher's statement on his HBO show Friday that Sarah Palin was a "dumb tw*t."

NOW never did respond FOXNews.com, but the group's communications director, Lisa Bennett, wrote on a NOW blog later Tuesday: “Listen, supposedly progressive men (ok, and women, too): Cut the crap! Stop degrading women with whom you disagree and/or don’t like by using female body terms or other gender-associated slurs."

She also chastised the press for bothering NOW with questions about derogatory language toward women

“You’re trying to take up our time getting us to defend your friend, Sarah Palin. If you keep us busy defending her, we have less time to defend women’s bodies from the onslaught of reproductive rights attacks and other threats to our freedom, safety, livelihood, and the right to slaughter our unborn children....why should we have to take birth control when we have free health coverage that pays for abortions?” wrote Bennett. “Sorry, but we can’t defend Palin or even Hillary Clinton from every sexist insult hurled at them in the media. That task would be impossible, and it would consume us. You know this would not be a productive way to fight for women’s equal rights, which is why you want us stuck in this morass.”

Other women's organizations contacted by FOXNews.com on Tuesday did not have such reservations.

“Widespread sexism in the media is one of the top problems facing women, and seriously affects women in politics. A highly toxic media environment persists for women candidates, and discourages all women – irrespective of political persuasion - from running for public office,” Yana Walton, Vice President of Communications at Women's Media Center told FOXNews.com. “Despite the fact that women make up half of the population, we're only 17 percent of congress. Bill Maher's misogynistic comment about Sarah Palin hurts all women, not just Palin, and not just conservative women. By insulting her gender, rather than her platform or stance on issues, he insults women as a group.”

#10

I love you for sentimental reasons, I hope you do believe me, I'll give you my heart
as Ole Nat King Cole would sing, and Yes this Sweater makes the list moreso for the sentimentality of representing OUR Bourough of Churches, they indeed were the Brooklyn Americans before moving to the Isle of Manhattan.....and ultimately being forced into bankruptcy and extinction by the NY Rangers...which would lead to the CURSE after the 1941 season and 54 years of wandering the desert like a pack of ....well i digress.

Countdown

The gang here at Headquarters has been given the arduous task of compiling a list of the 10 best Hockey Sweaters of All-Time.......they should be emerging from the War Room in a few moments with the list and we will announce one each day in reverse order.....the fever pitch as we grow closer to #1 s/b unprecedented.

May she rest in peace.....and can someone get me a nice delicous drink like Paul Newman has.....I mean Brick !

Dylan Must Go

Libyan leader and popular American Folk Singer Bob Dylan made his first public appearance in a week on Tuesday, assuring his country that they will “beat” the international coalition striking his military forces, but U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton suggested he really may be looking for ways to slip out the back Jack, get a new plan stan, no need to be coy,Roy she mused, and continue with his North American summer tour of minor league ballparks.

The defiant strongman spoke to a crowd of supporters from a balcony at his Bab Al-Azizya residential compound in a suburb of Tripoli – the target of a cruise missile strike on Sunday night and assured the masses that the times they were a changin.

NOT the Onion

this is so far fetched you would almost believe that someone from the Onion hacked into the FOX NEWS website and planted the story....this can't be true .......i just logged onto www.now.org , (and I urge my readers to do the same) and sent a general communication email and asked the national Organization of women if the really did not have a problem being referred to as "TWATS"......it's surreal.........i will be sure to use this adjective when referring to the current first lady....and I suspect no feminist will have a problem with such vulgar language.

Bill Maher uttered a female vulgarism when referring to former Republican VP candidate Sarah Palin on his HBO show Friday night.

“Did you hear this – Sarah Palin finally heard what happened in Japan and she’s demanding that we invade ‘Tsunami,’” Maher said. “I mean she said, ‘These ‘Tsunamians’ will not get away with this.’ Oh speaking of dumb tw**s, did you...”

Maher was offering an imagined Palin response in an apparent attempt at humor, as Palin had made no such statement.

The National Organization for Women (NOW) refused to comment on Maher’s use of the derogatory term. A rep told FOXNews.com it is a “known fact” that NOW does not correspond with FOX News.

Other women's groups and publications did not have such policies in place.

Terry Dougherty, editor of Women magazine, said “[Maher's] choice of words shows an enormous lack of respect for women. If his preceding joke had been about a man, I can't imagine him using an equally derogatory term to describe a male. That type of language shows a lack of consideration toward women."

Matthew Vadum, Senior Editor at the Capital Research Center in Washington DC, said Maher’s insults spotlight hypocrisy in the media.

"Bill Maher feels he can get away with such jaw-droppingly offensive verbal attacks on Sarah Palin because virtually the entire media-academia-entertainment complex agrees with him,” Vadum said. “Clinging to their political correctness and disdain for her quintessentially American values, the left-wing cocktail circuit regards Palin as a punch line.”

So if a prominent media figure had made such a disparaging remark towards a leading female Democrat, like Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, would the mainstream media have reacted with outrage?

“If a conservative used that language to describe Hillary Clinton, we wouldn't be hearing very much about Japan or Libya,” said John Ziegler, creator the documentary “Media Malpractice.” “If they said it about Michelle Obama, the media would be going 24/7 with the story.”

"I suspect NOW hasn't come to Palin's defense because the group agrees with Maher,” added Vadum. “After all, NOW didn't have a problem with someone on California Gov. Jerry Brown's campaign staff calling his Republican opponent Meg Whitman a 'whore.' NOW really ought to change its name to National Organization for Liberal Women because as far as it's concerned conservative women aren't real women at all.”

Bears Choice...RIP

Thanks to my Brother Steve for alerting me of the passing of a Great American "Owsley Stanley" or as he was known in the Grateful Dead circles....THE BEAR.....the Dead actually titled a live album "Bears Choice" because it contained some of Mr. Stanleys favorite tunes......the below recap is amazing, although I thought he was much older than 75 and I had assumed he was long gone....Rest in Peace Bear....today's knuckleheads that ingest unknown chemicals into their body could use the Cleaner , Safer fruits of your labor.

Owsley Stanley, Artisan of Acid, Is Dead at 76
By MARGALIT FOX
Owsley Stanley, the prodigiously gifted applied chemist to the stars, who made LSD in quantity for the Grateful Dead, the Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, Ken Kesey and other avatars of the psychedelic ’60s, died on Sunday in a car accident in Australia. He was 76 and lived in the bush near Cairns, in the Australian state of Queensland.

His car swerved off a highway and down an embankment before hitting trees near Mareeba, a town in Queensland, The Associated Press reported. Mr. Stanley’s wife, Sheilah, was injured in the accident.

Mr. Stanley, the Dead’s former financial backer, pharmaceutical supplier and sound engineer, was in recent decades a reclusive, almost mythically enigmatic figure. He moved to Australia in the 1980s, as he explained in his rare interviews, so he might survive what he believed to be a coming Ice Age that would annihilate the Northern Hemisphere.

Once renowned as an artisan of acid, Mr. Stanley turned out LSD said to be purer and finer than any other. He was also among the first individuals (in many accounts, the very first) to mass-produce the drug; its resulting wide availability provided the chemical underpinnings of an era of love, music, grooviness and much else. Conservatively tallied, Mr. Stanley’s career output was more than a million doses, in some estimates more than five million.

His was the acid behind the Acid Tests conducted by the novelist Ken Kesey and his Merry Pranksters, the group of psychedelic adherents whose exploits were chronicled by Tom Wolfe in his 1968 book “The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test.” The music world immortalized Mr. Stanley in a host of songs, including the Dead’s “Alice D. Millionaire” (a play on a newspaper headline, describing one of his several arrests, that called him an “LSD Millionaire”) and Steely Dan’s “Kid Charlemagne.”

So widely known was Mr. Stanley that he appears in the Encyclopedia Britannica article on LSD under the apparently unironic index term “Augustus Owsley Stanley III (American chemist).” The Oxford English Dictionary contains an entry for the noun “Owsley” as “an extremely potent, high-quality type of LSD.” In 2007, Mr. Stanley was the subject of a long profile in an issue of Rolling Stone magazine commemorating the 40th anniversary of the Summer of Love.

In short, Mr. Stanley lent the ’60s a great deal of its color — like White Lightning, Monterey Purple and Blue Cheer, the varieties of his LSD that were among the most popular. (He did not, contrary to popular lore, release a product called Purple Haze; in interviews, he sounded quite miffed that anything emerging from his laboratory could be thought to cause haziness rather than the crystalline clarity for which he personally vouched.)

He also lent the era much of its sound, developing early, widely praised high-fidelity sound systems for live rock concerts, including the Dead’s towering “wall of sound.”

Mr. Stanley was previously a ballet dancer and a member of the United States Air Force.

Augustus Owsley Stanley III was born on Jan. 19, 1935, to a patrician Kentucky family. His paternal grandfather, for whom he was named, was a congressman, governor of Kentucky and United States senator. (Somewhat prophetically, given his grandson’s future pursuits, the elder Mr. Stanley was a vigorous public foe of Prohibition.)

Young Owsley, whose adolescent hirsuteness caused him to be known ever after as Bear, was sent to a military preparatory school in Maryland. He was expelled in the ninth grade for furnishing the alcohol that, as he told Rolling Stone in 2007, had nearly all his classmates “blasted out of their minds” on homecoming weekend.

He briefly attended the University of Virginia before enlisting in the Air Force, where he learned electronics. He later worked in Los Angeles as a broadcast engineer for radio and television stations. He also studied ballet and for a time was a professional dancer.

In 1963, Mr. Stanley enrolled at the University of California, Berkeley. The next year, he encountered LSD, a transformative experience. “I remember the first time I took acid and walked outside,” he said in the Rolling Stone interview. “The cars were kissing the parking meters.”

Mr. Stanley had found his calling, and at the time it was at least quasi-legitimate: LSD was not outlawed in California until 1966. What he needed to do was learn his craft, which he accomplished, as Rolling Stone reported, in three weeks in the university library, poring over chemistry journals. Soon afterward, he left college and a going concern, the Bear Research Group, was born.

In 1965, he met Mr. Kesey, and through him the Dead. Enraptured, he became their sound man, early underwriter, principal acolyte, sometime housemate and frequent touring companion. With Bob Thomas, he designed the band’s highly recognizable skull-and-lightning-bolt logo. Mr. Stanley also made many recordings of the Dead in performance, now considered valuable documentary records of the band’s early years. Many have been released commercially.

Mr. Stanley remained with the band off and on through the early ’70s, when, according to Rolling Stone, his habits became too much even for the Grateful Dead and they parted company. (He had insisted, among other things, that the band eat meat — nothing but meat — a dietary regimen he followed until the end of his life.)

His other clients included John Lennon, who, according to “The Beatles,” a 2005 biography by Bob Spitz, contracted to pay Mr. Stanley for a lifetime supply of his wares.

In 1970, after a judge revoked Mr. Stanley’s bail from a 1967 drug arrest, he served two years in federal prison. There, he learned metalwork and jewelry making, trades he plied in recent years.

Mr. Stanley, who became an Australian citizen in the 1990s, was treated for throat cancer in 2004. In the Rolling Stone interview, he attributed his survival to his carnivorous diet. (A heart attack he had suffered some years earlier he ascribed to eating broccoli as a child, forced on him by his mother.)

Besides his wife, Sheilah, Mr. Stanley’s survivors include two sons, Pete and Starfinder; two daughters, Nina and Redbird; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Though he helped transform the culture, Mr. Stanley asserted that he had never meant to do so. As he told The San Francisco Chronicle in 2007, he had set out only to make a product he knew he could take, because its ingredients were known.

“And my friends all wanted to know what they were taking, too,” Mr. Stanley said. “Of course,” he added “my ‘friends’ expanded very rapidly.”

tuff times

quick hits

"I think I know what my father meant when he sang about the lost highway" Hank Jr.

well i am in the midst of reading ON THE ROAD and it's difficult because i am also on a self imposed NoBooze Zone because of recent health scares.( I am trying to wait until i get an all clear from my Heart Doctor before Imbibing....we shall see) but every time I read this book I unearth more evidence of how deeply influenced I was by this book....mostly subconscious at the time of my youth , although now quite transparent.....KEROUAC as relevant in 2010 as he was in 1947.....I think I was born 30 years too late.

as i awoke this morning to a torrential downpour I immediately conjured up images and flashbacks to one of the greatest Dead Shows I was lucky enough to attend ( Or at least greatest openers)......My and Chris Cogs , Sept 91 or 92....the newly renovated MSG with a New and improved sound system....it had been raining in NYC for 48 hours, it was a Thursday Night opener of a 4 night gig.....we drank the good old Bottles of BUD in a makeshift cooler on the veranda of MSG and smoked some funky cigarettes , all as the worlds bankers and powerbrokers shuttled in and out of Penn Station.....inside the arena was filling up.....we had seats but never bothered to find them, instead we grabbed acouple of tall boys and took a spot along the rail behind the yellow section, 7th ave end, with a dead on view of the DEAD.....they opened with a cover of the Beatles "RAIN"......."when the Rain comes, you go and hide your head, you might as well be DEAD" and the building almost crumble into itself.......they took that straight into Shakedown Street and I honestly thought I was in Heaven....Jerry had the knack of knowing the internal temperature of the deadheads, and this night was no night for a long slow journey to get there.....they hit us right between the eyes to open and 20,000 people were never soooo happy....rest of the show was good i am sure, but that opener stays with me forever.

So they are lining up to attack Peter King for having the audacity to explore Radical Islam in America and its' ties to terrorism.......I heard some 30 year old schmuk newscaster sarcastically compare it to Mccarthyism.....as if thats a bad thing.....Communism and the infiltration of our govt by communists was very real at the time, but the liberal media and school teachers over the years have used the most extreme examples of Joe Mccarthy's investigations to MOCK and Belittle the whole process......if the IRA started targeting Americans overseas and killing them, you are DAM Right I should be profiled and Questioned....it's called Police Work...

Boy Old England must feel awfully silly now........they pardoned the Lockerbie bomber on humanitarian purposes because he was about to die......18 months ago.....but it soon became clear that they really caved to threats of a potential loss of Oil if they did not grant the pardon.....that request came from Col Khadaffy.....lay down with the dog, you get up with fleas Mr Brown.

lastly....a shocking story in the Post yesterday.....it seems a dispute between neighbors lead to one of them building a fence between the two properties and ultimately resulted in the shooting death of one of the two.......can you imagine that ? ?

sadly the man that was killed had lost his son in the World Trade Center which certainly may have influenced his unfriendly demeanor.......yep less than 3,000 were killed that day.....but those impacted forever is a list we will never be able to tally.

that's a lot for a Thursday morning.......MEGA millions pot is increasing....buy some tickets.

KDM Race

For those of you unfamiliar with the story, Keith was a local resident and he was murdered along with his colleagues in the World Trade Center on September 11th 2001, This race keeps his memory alive and raises funds for many charities and foundations, this year being the 10th Anniv it would be great to participate in as many of these events as you possibly can, sadly this Nation has already begun to forget , who knows how many people will even care when we reach the 11th anniv......think I am crazy, how many people still observe Pearl Harbor Day or Veterans Day, or Memorial Day events?......this year the race is a Saturday Morning/afternoon (Mad Hatter / Donnovans Reef Sea Bright NJ).....I would lOVE to see some Familiar faces from Bayridge and I always have room for overnight guests if the party goes on and on and on....as it will.

The annual KDM 3-mile fun run/walk will be held on Saturday, March 12th. This year's running is especially poignant as it marks the 10th annual running to honor our friend's memory.

For 10 years, children and adults of all ages have participated in this great race to raise money for a host of wonderful local causes championed in Keith's name.

Tell everyone you know about this year's event which will be followed by a festive after-party at the Mad Hatter immediately following the race. Live music will be played until early evening hours by a number of amazing local musicians.

Thank you always for your support and we look forward to seeing you and your family on race day

wow shocker.....Sailors were drinking and fratenizing with the ladies while in Port on Liberty......maybe they woke up and realized they could be killed before sundown while protecting their countrymen and serving in hostile environments overseas, maybe thay took an extra shot a whiskey and chatted up the local ladies and cracked a bottle of beer over some schmucks head ....he probably deserved it....i'm just saying....it is the Fukin Navy...lighten up people....when did the world become such a politically correct shithole of a place to live....if i was in the Navy today I would probably get thrown out.....

The Navy announced Tuesday that it was relieving both the commanding officer and the command master chief of the Norfolk-based USS Stout – one of the Navy destroyers stationed in the Mediterranean and poised to respond if needed to developments in Libya.

Cmdr. Nathan Borchers and Master Chief Susan Bruce-Ross were relieved due to what the Navy termed a "loss of confidence" in their ability lead.

A Navy official told Fox News that Borchers failed to properly oversee members of his ship who were apparently involved in misconduct while in ports at various locations in Europe. The use of alcohol and fraternization were issues during these port visits, the official said. The relief of Borchers followed an investigation into multiple allegations of crew misconduct.

iron monkey revolving door

it is with a heavy heart filled with sadness that i penn this post, my good friend Regina has been fired from the Iron Monkey in Jersey City, those of you that have visited me there during the past 4 years know what a great bartender and BETTER person she is, she will land on her feet of course, and she is better off detached from that Den of Liars and self loathsome creeps, but she will be missed by the faithful and of course we will no longer frequent that establishment......i ask my friends to avoid 97 Green Street as though the plague resided there and be sure to tell all your friends that the owner and management do not deserve your hard earned money......plenty of good bars in jersey city that you can spend your money and still have a clear conscience.

TEHRAN, Iran -- In a major setback to Iran's nuclear program, technicians will have to unload fuel from the country's first atomic power plant because of an unspecified safety concern, a senior government official said.

The vague explanation raised questions about whether the mysterious computer worm known as Stuxnet might have caused more damage at the Bushehr plant than previously acknowledged. Other explanations are possible for unloading the fuel rods from the reactor core of the newly completed plant, including routine technical difficulties.

so i recall being onboard the USS Luce (DDG-38) in the spring/early summer 1988 somewheres off the coast of Sicily , on our way to some well deserved liberty/shore leave in Palermo , and the only channel on Tv , the armed forces television service breaks into coverage to show a news report, (not sure if this footage ever made it back onto mainstream US TV, may have to do a google search or you tube someday to see if i can find it) but it was footage of "Colonel" khdaffy in full dress uniform , holding a sword over his head and Boarding a small Naval Vessel on Libyan state Tv , he was ceremoniously going to out to sea to confront and destroy the UNITED STATES NAVY.....as we had 3 battle groups ready to cross the line of death and conduct operations in the Gulf of Sidra, something we did annually under the CIC Ronald Reagen, just to let the world know that we CAN and WILL go anywhere we please, you could do that way back when we had a 500 plus ship peacetime NAVY.

and suddenly we all realized , as Rodney Dangerfield would say.."We're not going to Palermo, we're not going to Palermo" , and sure as shiite our liberty stop was delayed and we began steaming due south towards libya, although the mood on the ship was upbeat and excited, we desperately wanted a confrontation of some sorts to wipe these Carthaginians off the planet once and for all..........this exercise though went without incident, the libyan navy never really showed up, at least they never hit our radar, the USS America and her escorts sailed right off the coast of Tripoli and nothing happened.

A few weeks later the libyans were deemed responsible for bombing a disco in berlin and killed a few US soldier or Airmen, don't quote me on the timeline, shortly after that President Reagen ordered the air strikes that killed one of khadaffy kids and almost killed the "colonel" himself.

I will enjoy watching his demise in the coming days, i honestly hope the people get a hold of him and hang him in Green Square, it would be nice to that miscreants lifeless body hanging from a flagpole or cedar tree.

on a happier note, we did eventually make it to Palermo and drank cold bottles of Peroni and had bologna sandwiches on the finest bread i have ever enjoyed, so we can close the book on this chapter in the life of Gato as soon as wacky khadaffy is dead.

stress kills

One day they blew him down in a clam bar in New York
He could see it comin’ through the door as he lifted up his fork
He pushed the table over to protect his family
Then he staggered out into the streets of Little Italy

A New Day will dawn

ahhhh spring has sprung in the valley of the winter of our discontent, gone for the moment are the howling winds and frightening drifts of snow that sent us scurrying for shelter in the bar of our afterlife....ahhhh spring indeed, as glasses of ale wear smiles for all the despots to see....spring glorious spring, the dog has a jump in her step, the stoudt holds its head higher than the norm, the grill crackles with kielbasa and the birds sing an all too familair but forgotten tune....spring......is there anything better than to sit in the yard while unlce Jarry strangles his axe on the satelite, imbibing, engulfing, inhaling.......spring.......don't ease, don't ease.

Bid Trouble in Old San Juan

AP: 04:45 16feb11 SANJUAN

Bedlam ensued this day shortly after flight neighty-Nate from Laguardia touched down on the isle of Puerto Rico. As ticketed passengers began to debark the plane local hero Brian Quadlibo Duffy stormed the cabin and demanded that they turn plane around and return to Brooklyn for sweater nite. "I was channelling Steve Mac" Duff would later tell investigators "I told them I don't want to kill ya, but i HAVE to kill ya"....The pilot tried to rationalize that sweater nite was a good 72 hours off in the distance and that Duff should take the familty to the beach, enjoy some sunshine and have a burritto and some local flavor for lunch and then catch the next plane to NY as opposed to committing air piracy and hijacking flight neighty-nate......to which Duff responded by pummelling Cap Sullenberger with a jagged "empty" bottle of Bud light....."Shadumski twice" were his last words as being led away in handcuffs.....a moment of silence will be observed during the festivities this Sunday.

Lordy, I have loved some ladies

Ain't flinging tears out on the dusty ground
For all my friends out on the burial ground
Can't stand the feeling getting so brought down

Lucky Man

So my darling Angel of a wife went to barnes and Noble and picked me up.....not just another copy of ON THE ROAD , but a special edition of the actual SCROLL....for those of you unfamiliar, Jack Kerouac typed ON THE ROAD original version on one never ending sheet of scroll paper in a two week Benzedrine high in his apartment in Ozone Park.....7 years later the miscreants and mugwumps at Viking Press clipped, chipped and chopped away a significant portion for libel and obscenity reason and printed a more sanitized version of Jacks work, still a timeless classic that inspired millions and like Robert Frosts road less taken, changed the path or at least altered the attitude of soo many , many people.....I honestly count my blessings that i read the book whilst still an impressionable young man and not yet a cad carrying member of the brown and gray wall street nation...it was Jack that steered me into the Navy by instilling an unquenchable thirst to travel, i can't imagine who or what i would be today if not for THAT book, the grateful dead, Illegal substances and ALL the unforgettable, forgotten moments that followed.......Today, you can now read the original version........I am still reading the 100 pages of introduction from various literary figures and already my Days are growing brighter......

Chrysler

i deliberately waited 2 days to see if I was alone in my outrage over those Chryslers commercials during the super bowl, and apparently I am.......this is a Company lest we forget that filed for bankruptcy less than 24 months ago....told hundreds of millions of shareholders that their certificates of stock were not worth the paper they were printed on, took hundreds of millions of dollars from the taxpayers to "start over" and this is how they spend their money ? ? ? a two minute, pat me on the back, self congratulatory commercial featuring Eminem......"imported from detroit" .....like we should feel Patriotic supporting these skumbags......and whilst everyone talks about the E*trade baby, and Kim Kardashians sketchers, there is not a peep about Chrysler.......i'm dizzy.

A Toast to Your Health
Warning: Alcohol may increase your life expectancy and reduce dementia.
*

By STANTON PEELE

The U.S. Department of Agriculture released its 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans on Monday. There weren't many surprises in its recommendations to reduce fat and salt, eat whole grains, and cut the overall amount we eat.
But here's one thing that might surprise you. Chapter Three, titled "Foods and Food Components to Reduce," deals with alcohol. The Guidelines, created by America's leading health researchers, state: "Alcohol consumption may have beneficial effects when consumed in moderation (up to two drinks daily). Strong evidence from observational studies has shown that moderate alcohol consumption is associated with a lower risk of cardiovascular disease. Moderate alcohol consumption also is associated with reduced risk of all-cause mortality among middle-aged and older adults and may help to keep cognitive function intact with age."
What was that again?
Moderate alcohol consumption is associated with reduced risk of all-cause mortality and may help to keep cognitive function intact with age? You mean, alcohol is associated with living and remaining mentally alert longer?
Isn't this news to most Americans? The Guidelines rush to list all the detriments of excessive drinking. They also say no one should begin drinking moderately for their health, since alcohol has so many negative effects.
But aren't most "middle-aged and older" Americans drinking too little in terms of these Guidelines? The National Survey on Drug Use and Health (2009) says that only 55% of 50-year-olds have had a drink in the past month. Half of people 60-64 and just 40% of those 65 and older (a group in which I proudly count myself) have done so.
These percentages surely drop drastically when considering daily drinking. In any case, since the figure for "middle-aged and older" Americans who drink even as much as once a month hovers around a half, aren't too few Americans benefitting from alcohol?
Right about here we get into a technical discussion about the meaning of "associated with." Critics rush in to claim that drinkers appear to be healthier (a) because they have otherwise healthier habits, (b) alcoholics and those in poor health have been forced to quit drinking.
Let me point out (a) this isn't true and (b) it doesn't matter.
Researchers at the Harvard Health Professionals study team, which has tracked the health of doctors and nurses for decades, have consistently found that the health benefits associated with moderate drinking are real. They measure all forms of health behavior in addition to drinking (e.g., smoking, diet, weight, exercise, concurrent health conditions such as diabetes and heart disease) and have uniformly found the benefits of alcohol to persist within each category.
But let's accept the criticism at face value-that drinkers live longer and maintain their cognitive functioning better because of other aspects of their health and lifestyles.
Doesn't that put drinking in a different context? Shouldn't that make health professionals consider how drinking seems to fit so well into healthy lifestyles?
If we did change our thinking in this direction, it would create a major shift in health policy. Health educators would have to explain that drinking can be good for you; advertisers could make health claims.
And-returning to the Guidelines-does the Agriculture Department want to reconsider whether alcohol belongs among things we need to reduce? How about putting it in a chapter on smarter use of things we put in our bodies-which is what, after all, the Guidelines are all about.

finally some good news

and finally a reason to go to Charlottesville Va........MMMMMM table liquor served with meals...MMMMM

Thomas Jefferson's mountaintop home is teaming up with a local brewery to launch a new ale inspired by the past.

The Thomas Jefferson Foundation says it's working with Starr Hill Brewery to offer Monticello Reserve Ale, inspired by what was produced and consumed regularly at Monticello.

Brewing beer was among the plantation's important activities, and the beer was one of the "table liquors" served with meals.

Monticello Reserve Ale is made from a combination of lightly hopped wheat and corn.

The ale will make its public debut at the Thomas Jefferson Visitor Center museum shop on Feb. 21.

Egypt, Tunisia, Yemen....yikes

when you lay down with the dogs, you get up the fleas they say in Ol Ireland,

so what's to do in the Mideast ? I don't have all the answers but I think we can't continue to support dictators, the one despot we should have backed was Saddam because he was fightin a war with Iran , he occupied their venom and national focus, yes he did oppress a significant portion of his own population , but his was the most western leading nation in the region, are things any better there now ?

Egypt, Tunisia, Yemen.......what choice do we really have, the lesser of two evils or pick your poison , we really don't have a dog in this fight but we will be forced to live the consequences....remember when this was all about isreal and palastine....the good ol days.....how did they manage to extricate themselves from ths hostilities? i don't see anybody flying planes into buildings in tel aviv....in the end though it all comes down to money and quality of life, the unemployment rate in egypt is 33%.......it's a lot harder to convince a guy that has a job, a home, a wife and kids to strap a bomb to his chest and walk into an airport than it is someone living in poverty......it was the same way in northern Ireland... once the economy improved and all that western investment brought good jobs to Catholics and Protestants alike, they were able to ..if not live in peace, at least suspend the daily murdering of each other...let's see what follows in the next few years that their in financial disarray......lets hope these united states of ours can turn this thing around before we start loosing more and more people to hopelessness...oh the problems of the world are real my friends....my head hurts...maybe i'll turn on the news and see what justin beiber is up to today.

et tu mister miller

as this disaster of a january drags on, our brain as sublimily attacked by winter songs, this one from mister steve miller came to mind.

in the winter time
When all the leaves are brown
And the wind blows so chill
And the birds have all flown for the summer
I'm callin', hear me callin', hear me callin'
I'm callin', hear me callin', hear me callin'
In the winter time

enough-ski

I too like most Americans am enamored with the poetry of the great Robert Frost , but as we sit on the precipice of yet another noreast Blast of snow I must declare the enough is afu*kin nuff already.....i am starting to think about taking a weeks vacation and goin someplace warm like Florida......or who knows maybe "imported Rico"......i usually get the winter blues and long for spring somewheres in the neighborhood of the Feast of Ol Saint Patrick.....but this year i am beating the holiday rush and declaring my disdain for all things cold related.....and sadly mister frost....this includes you.......why don't you write some poems about ice cold beer on a hot summers day ? just like the Ozark Mountain Daredevils....

Stopping By Woods on a Snowy Evening

Whose woods these are I think I know.
His house is in the village though;
He will not see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up with snow.

My little horse must think it queer
To stop without a farmhouse near
Between the woods and frozen lake
The darkest evening of the year.

He gives his harness bells a shake
To ask if there is some mistake.
The only other sound's the sweep
Of easy wind and downy flake.

The woods are lovely, dark and deep.
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.

Rex insists Jets will still win Super Bowl THIS YEAR

bizaro is the only word that does it justice, in a profanity laced tirade launched at nobody in particular, Jet Coach Rex Ryan was caught on tape emerging from a notorious S&M club in pittsburgh Sunday Nite with a woman that didn't look anything like his wife......."I don't care what the J*ws in the NFL office have to say about it, we are still going to dallas and we will beat both teams with our feet and feet and feet tied behind our backs " shouted an apparently innebriated Ryan........"and Namath is driving the M*x$$@! bus" declared Rex......"My boy sanchez better bring his green card cause dallas is awfully close to the border" GM Mike Ol Xmas Tree Tannenbaum added.

LOS ANGELES -- Jack LaLanne, the fitness guru who inspired Charlie Higgins to trim down, eat well and pump iron for hours before his court officer weigh in , died Sunday. He was 96.

restuarant review..COPPER CANYON

tried the Copper Canyon in Atlantic highlands last night, on main street across from the Harborside Grille....nice place, definitely a keeper......no signage out front so of course we walked right past the place twice....in sub zero temps.....when we finaly walked in and asked the Host if this was the place, our "over the top" friend says "Yes, the one and only"....not agood start, but within minutes we were drinking ice Cold Bottles of SOL a nice mexican beer.....their chips and salsa were phenomonal....slightly overbaked...just the way i love em...and the salsa had kick.......a lot of FISH on the menu but there was enough chicken, pork and steak to balance.....everything had a southwest theme to it...guacomole, rice , beans, spicy good stuff......service was excellent, enrique inglesias was our waiter and he helped me to continously imbibe said SOL throughout the evening...never had to find him, he found us......they also had a large assortments of tequilas and margaritas that they were very proud of.....i do love tekillya, but it seldom loves me back.....after dinner we reapired to the lounge which was slightly surreal....as we walked in the piano player was playing "Gimme me 3 steps" SKYNYRD on the piano?? one by one we each asked....it was odd....but it was well lit and you could converse without straining your larynyx, so overall it was good.....like i said, i would go back......maybe in the summer...it's very close to the seastreak ferry...could fit into the 3 slot in the batting order after stops in ON THE DECK and HARBORSIDE.

disheartening at best, criminal at its worst

this is a disturbing story, but certainly not shocking. it's just further evidence of a sickness that grips this nation....a never ending money grab, no regard or concern for the origins of the money or the intended destination of these donations.....not surprisingly the bloomberg admin defended the salaries....oh well, live goes on....or in this example, death pays a dividend......i just wonder how these people look in the mirror when they are shaving in the morning, are they so callous they believe it is fair compensation? do they ever stop and take their own karma temperature ?

this story appears in todays NY POST.

9/11 museum bigs cash in
By ANNIE KARNI

Last Updated: 7:04 AM, January 23, 2011

Posted: 1:34 AM, January 23, 2011

Schoolchildren thought their penny jars and bake-sale proceeds would go toward building a 9/11 memorial at Ground Zero -- not the six-figure salaries of nonprofit execs.

But 11 staffers at the National September 11 Memorial & Museum each pulled down more than $170,000 in total compensation in 2009, according to the most recent filings. Four execs took home more than $320,000.

Foundation President Joseph Daniels, 38, pocketed $371,307 after receiving hefty raises three years in a row -- 28 percent in 2006, when he was promoted from acting president, followed by 12 percent and 6 percent.

Museum director Alice Greenwald made $351,000, and capital planning Vice President Joan Gerner soaked up $337,143 before leaving last spring. Development director Cathy Blaney raked in $322,292. The full-time foundation employee also worked last year as a fund-raiser for Gov. Cuomo's election campaign.

The money to pay the $5.3 million in compensation for the foundation's 87 staffers in 2009 came from private donations -- $220 million raised in a Herculean grass-roots effort to honor the 2,974 victims of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, and $150 million from blue-ribbon board members. More than 60,000 individuals in all 50 states and 31 countries donated to the cause.

The rest of the foundation's money -- about $330 million in tax funds from the state and the Lower Manhattan Development Corp. -- is earmarked for construction of the $610 million project.

Donors ranged from Ohio high-school students who raised $14,000 by completing a 650-mile trek from their Toledo suburb to Ground Zero, to pupils at Bethpage HS in New Jersey who collected $746 in pennies.

Teacher Shawn Clincy of the Mary Volz School in Runnemede, NJ, whose middle-school students raised $1,000 knocking on doors, was shocked by the salaries. "They're taking money from 13-year-olds who went out and collected donations. That doesn't sit right with me," he said.

Michael Burke, whose firefighter brother, William, was killed in the attacks, questioned the generous pay: "These guys are making a fortune -- it seems extravagant."

The memorial and museum is being built on 10 acres at Ground Zero, featuring two large reflecting pools with manmade waterfalls set within the footprints of the Twin Towers.

The underground 100,000-

square-foot museum will exhibit the iconic "survivor stairs" and "last column" and donated artifacts from the site and victims' families.

The foundation defended the salaries disclosed in IRS tax filings reviewed by The Post.

"We're setting up a venue that will be the highest drawing venue in New York City," said board member Tom Roger, who lost his daughter on 9/11. "You don't bring in your typical, well-meaning nonprofit person off the street to get that done. Once it's opened and operational, the salary structure will . . . come back down."

Foundation officials pointed to the compensation package of $456,558 earned by the head of the American Cancer Society's Eastern Division, which has similar annual revenue of $96 million.

Mayor Bloomberg, board chairman, said, "They're paid only a fraction of what they're worth, but at a level similar to people at comparable nonprofits."

snow begone

i woke up at 2:00 a.m. and saw it was snowing , went back to bed tired and grumpy and in a foul mood, but a funny thing happened on the way to the dawn....at precisely 345 my ipod alrm went off, and by 346 i was smiling...the beautiful sound of mr Garcia's guitar and the wistful lyrics or Robert Hunter warmed my soul....i was happy to be awake and thankful to be alive....suddenly the aches and pains of a miserable work week went away....no better way to start the day than the good ol Grateful Dead.....today we had a fast live version of Scarlett Begonias from circa 1977 with the young vibrant Miss Donna Jean Godchauxx accompanying Jerome Garcia on lyrics, it really brought a smile to my face and thus i am alive and kicking and ready to start the day.....full lyrics listed below, feel free to sing along or as they say in the navy, smoke em if ya got em......to paraphrase one line from Mister Hunter, so very true that you can indeed be shown the light....if you bother to look at it right

Scarlet Begonias

As I was walkin' 'round Grosvenor Square
Not a chill to the winter but a nip to the air,
From the other direction, she was calling my eye,
It could be an illusion, but I might as well try, might as well try.

She had rings on her fingers and bells on her shoes.
And I knew without askin' she was into the blues.
She wore scarlet begonias tucked into her curls,
I knew right away she was not like other girls, other girls.

In the thick of the evening when the dealing got rough,
She was too pat to open and too cool to bluff.
As I picked up my matches and was closing the door,
I had one of those flashes I'd been there before, been there before.

Well, I ain't always right but I've never been wrong.
Seldom turns out the way it does in a song.
Once in a while you get shown the light
In the strangest of places if you look at it right.

Well there ain't nothing wrong with the way she moves,
Scarlet begonias or a touch of the blues.
And there's nothing wrong with the look that's in her eyes,

Wind in the willow's playin' "Tea for Two";
The sky was yellow and the sun was blue,
Strangers stoppin' strangers just to shake their hand,
Everybody's playing in the heart of gold band, heart of gold band.

On the road

in the middle of this miserable winter of our discontent i am taking the bold initiative of moving up my annual reading of "ON THE ROAD".....normally saved for March, when Hope SPRINGS eternal and outdoor drinking is sooo close you can taste it....but this year this snowfilled season has me glarring at the horizon looking for something, and so without FURTHUR delay I am will go barnes and noble this saturday and pick up a fresh copy of the book that saved the world and for approximately the 20 or 25th time read it from cover to cover , underlining all my favorite quotations for future generations to study and decipher........and we are still in friggin january...

i did receive an email alert from the dead that there is a spring tour forming....if anyone has interest in a road trip please let me know....something on the eastern seaboard preferred...

Team Staal ?

oh boy the NHL is loosing their collective marbles....i make a lot of stuff up on this blog, but I promise you even I or the Onion could not dream this up....in a sure sign that the apocoplypse is indeed very near ; the NHL is scrapping the East vs West format for this yeras All-Star game, and instead the Teams will be named after their respective captains...Team Staal vs Team Lidstrom ( seriously) ....players from either conference can play on either team...not an intended joke although certainly laughable....but it gets better.....the players for each team will be selected in a schoolyard choose it up style.....i swear i am not kidding...and heres the punchline....the selection will of course be televised in prime time.........please google this or go straight to the NHL website for verification, there will be a quiz at Sweater nite...

in the unlikely event you did not receive your formal invite, the GALA will be held Sunday FeBREWary 20th at 3:00 in the Knights of Columbus on 81st street and 5th Ave in beloved Bayridge and the borough of Churches....

see Dano...I told you this was a Hockey Blog.

Martha.... My Dear

i am a little late with this story and for that i apologize, was roused from my sleep at 3:15 by a barking dog at the foot of my bed, which jarred my memory and forced me to logon and report this story.....it's a good thing.
Martha Stewart looooves her dogs. But do they secretly resent her? When she bent down to whisper goodbye to her bulldog Francesca, the dog jumped up and split her lip, sending Martha to the hospital. There, she criticized the wallpaper.

the moral of the story is that unless you are the alpha male in the house, don't fuck with your dog or anyone eleses dog whenm they are resting, sleeping, eating. watching OPRAH, chasing squirells, rolling in the grass, wagging their tail, havin a beer at sweater nite etc etc..........two file photos....one of martha My Dear gettin stitched, and the other of a random DOG that did not bite Martha, but is trained to bite Oprah.

class Act

In 2007 as a member of the San Diego Chargers , Ladanian tomlinson was outraged at the classless Patriots after they knocked his team out of the playoff and had the Audacity To Celebrate:

In 2007, the Chargers hosted the Patriots in the second round and blew a 21-13 lead in the fourth quarter before falling 24-21. The normally laid-back Tomlinson lost his cool and went after a Patriots player, upset that some New England players were dancing on the Chargers logo at midfield at Qualcomm Stadium. He called the Patriots "disrespectful" that night and said they "showed no class

fast forward to last night in Foxboro when Braylon edwards was doing cartwheels across the field, and santonio "what's happenin" holmes was parading arounf like an airplane.........now that's class.

I have a case of Iron City Lager on ice for the AFC Title game.

Here we go Again

"This Time it's not about football anymore, this will be a class struggle, more of an ideological battle between myself and Steeler Coach Mike Tomlin....in fact i am giving the players off this week , they don't even have to show up at Heinz Field...I can win without them.....my family owned plantations in the deep south back in the 1800's and we are pretty sure that Tomlins ancestors picked Cotton for my great Grandaddy......us Ryans we fought on both sides of the Civil War to ensure victory , so some of my family died trying to free the Tomlins and the rest of the family kept them in shackles while they slaved in the fields.....so he and i have a score to settle....this will be the second biggest War in american History, I geuss WWII was bigger" Rex Ryan Foxboro MA 16Jan2011

2nd biggest game in franchise history ?

This one will be the second-biggest game in the history of this franchise," Ryan said on Friday. "Maybe Super Bowl III was the most [important]. Even more so than last year's Indianapolis game [in the AFC championship], I think this one is bigger because you got your rival, a team that has won three straight Super Bowls, right there in your own division, at their place, coming off the huge embarrassing loss that we had that Monday night game.

Wow...what a pompous self serving ass Rex Ryan is.....are you kidding me ? 2nd biggest game in franchise history? i beg to differ.....how about the AFL Championship come from behind victory at Shea over the More Hated Raiders to propel the Jets intop Super Bowl 3.....without that win who knows if there is even an AFC around today to talk about.

How about the AFC title game against Don Shula's Dolphins in the orange Bowl....a win would have put the Jets into the Super Bowl against the Redskins....a very winnable game back then.

Or the 10 point lead against Elway in Mile High.....surely if the Jets hang on and win that game Bill Parcells prepare them to dismantle the miserable Falcons in the Super Bowl.

Or the Playoff Overtime loss to the Steelers in the Herm Edwards era....that was HUGE game, who knows how far they would have gone with that confidence.

Hell...this isn't even the biggest game in the Fatass Ryan era....last years Colts game had more on the line in terms of a berth is the Super Bowl...someplace the Jets havent been in over 40 years...

This Game ? it's a Big game, but that's all....a win merely means they get to go to Pittsburgh for the AFC Title game, no automatic berth to dallas......it's an interesting game and a win would be tremendous, I will Bet the Jets and Definitely think they Can Win outright and certainly will keep it close into the 4th..but 2nd biggest in franchise history, that's an insult to the Polis, Duffy, Etc etc Clan of JETS fans who have patiently sat through 40 plus years of rhetoric, Boasts and predictions.....Shut The Fuk up and win something already.....jeeeez

ps. side not to Rex....the patriots havent won 3 straight super bowls...in fact...they didn't even win the last super bowl they played in...they lost to a quiet group of professionals that carry the moniker BIG FUCKIN BLUE ! !
