such a long, long time to be gone

so last night while having a few well deserved beers post train, I sat in my bar listening to Robert Hunter and thinking about his impact...….I seemed to remember a story about him singing on a rooftop in lower Manhattan in the days after 9/11.....I wondered if I had imagined the whole thing or if someone had told me an urban legend....thankfully after an exhausted search I found this excerpt from a Robert Hunter Journal / Blog.....it made my day, this is how I choose to remember the man that penned the soundtrack of my life.

September 24, 2001

After dark fell, I sat alone on the roof, fifteen stories high, of a building in Soho commanding a panoramic and unobstructed view of the skyscrapers of midtown Manhattan and the lights of the bridges. I had my guitar in hand and felt moved to sing "Terrapin Station" to the City. While I sang, rain began falling - I stood and edged around to the other side of the roof, still singing, to the corner of the roof facing the World Trade Center, some fifteen blocks away, where the sky is bright with floodlight illuminating the work of the excavation crew. A great plume of smoke continues to rise from the site of the devastation. As I sang, a powerful wind blew up very suddenly - wind so strong it threatened to rip my guitar out of my hands - reminding me of the storm in which I first composed the words I now sang. I wondered if I was involved in some kind of sacrilege, singing like this in the face of all that had gone down - the wind roaring increasingly louder and stronger, as though filled with spirits, as though trying to blow me over, make me stop. I kept singing until the end, repeating the "hold away despair," expressing all the sorrow I felt for the lost loved ones and for the healing of this magnificent and resilient City. I hope it helped. Helped me, anyway.

so much ado was made about the Mets not being able to wear NYPD / FDNY hats on 9/11.....not to worry, they WILL next year....want to know why ? $$$$$$….NIKE has a contract to make the MLB uniforms starting next year.....AND Nike has a contract with the Deblasio administration to use the FDNY, NYPD, SDNY logos and trademarks and sell gear.....put 2 and 2 together and you spell greed.....somehow MLB will have a change of heart I suspect...…….what remains to be seen....and maybe our favorite Batallion Chief can weigh in.....does NIKE have EXCLUSIVE rights to these logos...and if Yes, does this mean a cease and desist letter from corporate will be sent to all the firehouse to stop printing their own T-shirts that include the FDNY shield, Logo, etc etc  ? ? time will tell.....but mark my words....next 9/11 will be brought to you from the America Hating scumbags from Oregon and probably every team will have a special NY edition hat

the New York city school system has officially surrendered....with the elimination of entrance exams to the best high schools they are once again punishing success....no more merit based admissions......this simpleton racist Carranzo doesn't understand or seem to care that the gifted students who work hard and take their education seriously are the reason the Delta Program and specialty high schools succeed.....its not a magic building or classroom......if you drop basic knuckleheads into these programs they will not become a genius overnight...but that's what they want to do......which of course will effectively bring everyone down to the shit level instead of raising a few kids up to the next level.....affirmative action for 50 years hasn't worked......billions of dollars hasn't worked......we can't raise stymie to a level of success, so what do we do ? ?  let's bring the white and Asian kids down to the thug level...…..great job deblasio.

i circled today’s game on the calendar the day the schedule was released....Yankees vs Dodgers 4:00 start in the brilliant Los Angeles sun at historic Dodger Stadium.....so many memories, so much history......I honestly was looking forward to reliving the 77,78,81 World Series........imagine my disgust and dismay to tune in and see both team wearing clown suits......you ruined it MLB....the only good thing is since the uniforms are black on black and white on white....we don’t have to because we can’t...read the ridiculous nicknames on their backs.

So I found myself on the treadmill at 4:40 this morning with the TV on mute waiting for Curtis Sliwa and listening to my iPod shuffle my 10,000 song catalogue....and Colors by Donavan Leitch came on.....it’s really hard to look at the world with anything but Rose tinted glasses when Donavan is singing......he was one of my brother Jays favorite musicians and he turned me onto Donavan through osmosis when I was 3 or 4.....I clearly remember Sunshine Superman, Jennifer Juniper and of course Atlantis emanating from his room at the front of the house on 76th street, the tar beach rooftop when he couldn’t get to Riis Park or the back deck.......don’t think for a minute that music doesn’t play a significant role in the formation of the brain, personality and most importantly the soul......I am exactly who I am because of the music I listened to when it mattered the most...... and I owe my poetic and sympathetic traits to the likes of Donavan Leitch.....and today as oft times before; I find myself in a great mood after listening to that soft spoken Scotsman.......would be great if thy New Sweater Nite Ramblers could cover some Donavan for SN22......”ah but I might as well try to catch the wind “

It seems the upside down insanity train that is the world today just keeps rolling..... The NYPD Police  Commissioner has fired a policeman for doing his job......the 500 pound slob that died that day refused to be arrested by 2 auxiliary cops and two uniformed officers...he put his own life in jeapordy by refusing an order to put his hands behind his back.....and then a black female Sargent ordered plainclothes officer Daniel Panteleo to “ take him down “ ....and officer Pantaleo followed an order and took the slob to the ground and handcuffed him.....the other 4 cops then and only then; jumped in and helped subdue the handcuffed individual.....the female Sargent stayed out of video range and will probably avoid scrutiny or prosecution....Pantaleo should sue the city....but the biggest price we all will pay is having an indifferent police force....and can you blame them ? I don’t....the police are being reduced to a diversified group of report takers....no longer fighting/preventing crime and the blood of all future victims of violent crime is on the hands of Deblasio...Commisioner O’Niel.....and Police Chief Monahan.......

As a follow up to my mainstream media and the fake recession post...... the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose from 18,500 on Election Day 2016 to the 26,000 mark last month......(that’s 7,500 points for you Bishop Ford Graduates ) .....and how many times in the last 3 years did you hear any of the MSM networks tie that news to President Trumps financial policies? ? Yep, me neither......but last week they all gleefully learnt a new phrase.....the inverted yield.....sure fire proof that a recession is coming....and every one that read a TelePrompTer followed that up by speculating that THIS was the result of the tariffs........funny if it wasn’t so sad.

A fairness shoutout to WCBS channel 2 news.....they have a new commercial that is the playing of the National Anthem......with incredible views of New York City, the American Flag and the heartland..... I watched it twice and the cynic in me could not find ANYTHING to complain about.....why they even showed the military, great job CBS...... I was honestly choked up watching.

Heartfelt condolences to the extended Nolan family on the passing of Maureen....it’s hard not to question Gods plan when someone so young, the mother of a child that needs her more than most; is taken.......but believing is what we do......if it weren’t so hard then everyone would do it......grief and anger are normal and healthy reactions, just don’t loose faith that somewhere down the path this will all make sense.

Well maybe not that dramatic but yesterday was a day of regret for me, maybe it was the anniversary of the start of my Navy career and too much reflecting and dwelling on mistakes I have made since , but I was down in the dumps and questioning myself as to why I bother....why should I care when it seems know one else does .....and then in the evening mail I received a card, I will keep the details private for now but it was a note of Thanks, a note of encouragement and a generous offer with regards to Sweater Nite 22.....it was a reminder that some people do care and someone in particular cared a great deal about Sweater Nite .....it lifted me up that’s for sure and I will keep that card on my nite stand to remind on the days where my efforts seem futile, that they are not....and I just have to keep plugging away....as we fly through our 50’s it seems harder than ever to get together for a few beers like we used to....take every opportunity, enjoy them all because tomorrow is already in the rear view, we can’t get that one back to do over....not sure if the senders of the card read the blog, but I will be reaching out to them directly to let them know how much I needed that.............” that last good morning sunshine will be the brightest you’ve ever seen “

To the ridiculous, as Thomas Paine pointed out  there’s not much difference....comes news from the wonderful world of college education...entrance exams will now include bonus points....not for getting questions right, but for the amount of adversity you faced growing up.....you heard that right....the schools will develop a criteria and then award points for kids who lived in high crime neighborhoods, had divorced parents, lived in city housing etc etc.......so in other words they are discriminating against kids that had a decent upbringing......once again America is punishing success and rewarding failure.....so the parent that works 2 or 3 jobs to raise their family in a good environment, who puts their own happiness aside to send their kids to the finest schools is being punished and the The slobs that leave their spouses and neglect their kids are reaping rewards in reduced tuition and favorable acceptance into schools.....America is upside down....the madness has to cease.

Yeah well it’s about that time, but sooo very much as changed since Robert Zimmerman graduates from Hibbing High School in Minnesota......today I read a snippet about a high school ( forgive me but I don’t recall where) that is doing away with the class valedictorian....they feel it creates unhealthy competition and stress......let that sink in..... the same school administrators across the country that have bullied a generation of kids into taking on mountains of debt to go to college because they would be useless without a college degree are now discouraging those kids from embracing their education and challenging themselves to be the best.........my friends, there is no such thing as unhealthy competition....it is in fact the only way to better yourself at whatever task is at hand.....the t-ball generation is afraid to strike out, afraid to loose, terrified of failure.....but instead of using those fears as motivation...they simply change the rules....every one gets to bat, keep swinging until you hit the ball and don’t allow anyone to keep score.....(Patrick Garry was a man ahead of his time, he always kept score at his daughters tball games and he made sure she knew if her team won or lost) .....sadly we are turning into a nation of frightened little girls.... requiring/demanding safe spaces....afraid of debate or differing opinions, unable or unwilling to accept unfavorable results ( elections, entrance exams etc etc) we are the calf that is being fattened for slaughter and our days are numbered....our enemies see it and are bidding their time......we will self implode or be extinguished in the next 50 years if we do not come to our senses.......I just hope their is beeeeer, dogs, music and women in the afterlife.....or wherever the fuck I end up. To Drink or Not too Drink, that is the true War of Will , and i'm talking real drinking, like a Long Range Toddy or a shot of Vekoma , not a Plus Que Parfait or some other silly Spinoff, By my Standards if you want to be a Game Winner you got start drinking at sunrise and continue throughout the day....if you have to run an errand on the Bodexpress you better grab a Roadster, if you want to  Win Win Win, just ignore the Tax and buy a bottle of Haikal and get busy...in no time you'll be dancing like a Master Fencer , telling humorous tales and displaying  your Cutting Humor and dazzling the felines like a regular Gray Magician...just always follow your own Code of Honor and if you have to leave your Country House always bring a Tacitus Flask of fine spirits, as Improbable as all this seems , it may just provide Maximum Security.

Omaha Beach

very disappointing to learn that Omaha Beach has scratched. As much as I love Mike Smith I was not going to put the favorite on top of my exotics..... I was hoping he would draw a lot of money his way and increase the payout for the winner ( I will reveal my pick on Saturday as improbable as that may seem.).........final thoughts on the Dan Jam , who knows what evil lurks, where  envy stirs bad intent, what darkness looms in the souls of the disenfranchised. when lifelong friends turn cold in the blink of an eye, one can only wonder why. not really.....last Friday, 5 days ago....an African American thug threw a five year old boy off the 3rd story balcony of the mall of America......as the days wore on it struck me as odd that they never mentioned the victims name, showed his picture or interviewed his family.....abc, cbs etc reported the story all weekend.....we saw stymies mug shot and learnt his name and motive, but only vague references to his victim .......alas you should have guessed by now he is White and his name is Landen Hoffman.........can you imagine if a white man in Mississippi threw a black kid off a balcony?? Do ya think more attention would be paid to the racial ramifications ?

yesterday as a light rain fell on the streets of bayridge, in a quiet unassuming bar and even less ceremonious atmosphere, I said goodbye to my former head linesman...perhaps forever.....he's off battle life's demons on greener pastures, and a newer and different battlefield with a fresh set of combatants on the foreign shores of the sunshine state.....I will miss him for sure, but truth be told ive been missing him for a longtime already....he checked out of our circle 18 months ago,  for whatever reason I know not what for.....he was top 5 interesting, entertaining and funny when he was in his prime, he probably never should have left bayridge in the 1st place....he had a good tun in the Garden Satate but it ended terribly and he was never quite the same...he was a modern day walter mitty, an ever changing chameleon, he struggled with the basic truths but he sure was funny and told a great story...i'll save his obituary for when he truky dies not just metaphorically.....I wish him well and I hope he makes peace with himself and enjoys whats left of this life......as bob seger says...."there we goo, turn the page"

Tom Terrrific got # 300 that day and we got another memory for a lifetime.....safe travels Mr. Seaver, a scary road ahead, we wish you well.....

For a poet iand a one man band (Simon & that other guy)....well I am that one man band....and my stops are neatly planned....today I’m headed to Bethlehem ( no , not Jesus) Pennsylvania....we have a wedding there on Saturday night....but today my solo mission is to roam the streets of downtown Bethlehem, searching for beer and the ghosts of a forgotten past....to walk the ancient empty streets ( too dead for dreaming)..I have come A day early with a list of establishments I wish to explore....I was bitten by the Kerouac bug at a young age....the nomadic caravan of traveling with the Grateful Dead, my years in the navy sailing the 7 continents and my sojourns on Amtrak , cross crossing the country and following the party....I was blessed with a good memory and I never forget a bar ...I would like to think that if I were dropped out of a space shuttle orbiting the earth, that I could find a suitable public house for Ales and tales within the hour....assuming of course one could survive re-entering earths atmosphere....but not only would I find a bar, but I would have it stored in the cognitive part of the brain from a visit in this lifetime....real or imagined.....today I take the train to the port authority and a bus back to Bethlehem....I quench my thirst in RIPPERS , have lunch in fegleys, pop into HARD BALL CIDER for what else ? A cider, down the hill for some whiskey in the Red Stag and some local craft beer in Joe’s Tavern....that should bring me to 3oclock, whenst I can Uber to my hotel and check in...the evening requires a shirt change and a new set of bars in the Lehigh valley....pj whelihans, Maloney’s ( I think) and dinner in a steak place called PRIME....but I doubt it is....night caps will be offered to all still standing at the lobby bar of my hotel...and one hundred thousand years from now I will still recall the names, faces and the stories they will tell...from a tiki bar in Fort Lauderdale in the early stages of dementia, I may ramble a sentence or two about this very day , before snapping to attention and the tasks at hand....leaving all within earshot confused BUT amused....But all my words come back to me in shades of mediocrity Like emptiness in harmony I need someone to comfort me”

Left nothin’ but a Panama hat And a pair of old Greek shoes ( Dylan )....or maybe it was a hurricane that Panama City this day.....reminds me of animated character of the night from my Navy years... a story I shared with Dano because he had a keen infatuation with the true insane creatures that roam the earth, and he thought it was amusing that I would cross paths with these folks ...”nuts attract nuts” dano would say....ah , but I digress...let me try to share the story of ole Alvarez....it’s a better story in person....in the spring of 1989 I was transitioning out of the US Navy, I was being processed in Pensacola Fla, but still had an apartment with my shipmates in Pascagoula MS.....so on fridays I would take a greyhound bus through Alabama to Mississippi ( I know I have told stories about mobile al in the past ) ....but on particular Friday I met a shipmate by the name of Chris ( smith or Schneider) waiting for the bus to MS...he introduced me to a fellow squid by the name of Alvarez, Alvarez was 30 going on 65....he too was leaving the Navy ( against his will) and eventually going home to Panama City Fla......Alvarez spoke very little English despite 10 years in uncleSams service , but he smiled a lot and was a bonafide alcoholic, no strings attached.... Chris assured me he was a good and I saw nothing to the contrary...it being Friday ( a day that ends in Y ) we decided to get some adult beverages for the ride.....I bought 12 pints of Budweiser and a styrofoam cooler w ice ....Chris and Alvarez went for a 64 ounce bottle of jack daniels...no chaser nor ice...we hit a bar before the bus came...it was late, we were pretty drunk when we got on the bus...at this point it was difficult to understand Alvarez, but his Sherpa guide CHRIS was doing his best to translate...we finally got on the bus and each took our own 2 seater in the back....me and ole Alvarez say across from each other and CHRIS sat in front of me....about 11 seconds into a 5 hour ride it started “hey Chris , hey Chris, CHREEES ?” Alvarez would say in his Mexican accent.....what do you want Chris would reply...” I drink...a little bit of the jack Daniels please, Chris “ .....to which Chris would reply “go ahead “and Alvarez would smile at me, unscrew the cap and guzzle some JD......and he was content...for about 3 minutes....until..... “ hey Chris, hey Chris. Chreeeeese? Until Chris gave his approval for another sip.....and Alvarez would smile from ear to ear after he took each sip......Chris would occasionally ask for the bottle and take a guzzle and they would pass it to me and I would offer them a pint... and so it went....about an hour into the trip Chris said he was going to try to sleep and that Alvarez didn’t have to ask permission every time he wanted to take a drink....Alvarez either didn’t understand or was a slave to protocol, because on it went across the great state of Alabama....”hey Chris, hey Chris “.... sometimes he would say that 10,15 times before Chris said what....”I drink....a little bit...of the jack Daniels please “......to his credit, despite my URGING, Alvarez refused to take a guzzle until Chris gave him the green light....2,3,4 and 5 hours later “ hey Chris, hey Chris “.....sometimes Chris would start screaming at him to let him sleep and go ahead and drink the fucking jack Daniels, the rest of the bus would look back at the three of us inquisitively ...and on it went.... we rolled into Pascagoula after midnight and I of course offered the two of them to crash at the apartment I was sharing with my shipmates and they accepted....the next morning Chris and Alvarez headed into town for a hotel......I saw Chris solo Sunday night on the bus to Pensacola and he told me Alvarez went crazy Saturday night and was locked up in the Mississippi police station...not a good place for a Mexican..... I never saw him again, but I would leave dano messages on his answering machine for 28 years imitating Alvarez....dano never met him, but he would imitate him too.....I miss both of those guys, true characters of the long dark night.

It’s been 2 years since failing 49ers of San Francisco Bay told kapernick to sit his ass on the bench and let another QB try to move the offense....and Kapernick decided he was suddenly indifferent to the the sport of football so he sat during the national anthem...when asked about after the 2nd week he had no comment....a few weeks later he started taking a knee during the anthem....just a backup QB crying out for attention....a week or two later he started wearing socks with images of Pigs in police uniforms and suddenly he had a cause.....the long the long lead in to my question....what has he been doing to further that cause in the past 2 “off seasons “ and all of last year when he was unemployed ?? How many trips to the south side of Chicago to visit the most violent black neighborhoods in the country? How many days spent volunteering in soup kitchens and community centers ??? How many marches, protests and interviews even ?? Remember, the knee was supposed to be about bringing attention to his cause ...and now comes word that NIKE will make him the center of their “just do it” 30th anniversary campaign....I wonder how many black kids will be murdered for the $300 sneakers he gets paid millions to endorse??.....
