Tough Love

It's not enough that we do our best; sometimes we have to do what's required.
Sir Winston Churchill

These are unchartered waters and unprecedented times that we live in , but we can not use that as a crutch to justify quitting or giving less than we can. It is in the face of adversity that out truest colors emerge, we must get up everyday , trudge back to the office or place of work , and give our best effort, even if there are no carrotts being dangled, or guarenteed success at the end of the day. I used to drop a C note in PC's @ happy hour, drinking delicious bottled beer, ordering dinner to go and taking car service instead of walking 4 blocks home......Now? i drink canned beer on the steel wheels express out of a plastic cup.......and love it.
You find joy in everyday, make the most of what you have and ask the Good Lord for help in recoginizing the good, instead of lamenting over the bad.

There is no blueprint....no master script to tell us what's supposed to happen, it is what we say it is......it is what we make of it.....As Herb Brooks Father told his son as they watched the US Mens Hockey Team ( of which Herb was the last man cut)win the Gold Medal in Squaw Valley........"Well Son , It looks like Coach made the Right Decision"

Nostalgia is reserved for one night a year ...Sweater Nite.....for 24 hours we are allowed to wistfully yearn for yesteryear, when the Players, the Jerseys, The Stadiums, The Big Beers, the announcers, the total atmosphere WERE BETTER.

After that it's back to work my friends.....we may drop dead at the desk someday, so don't waste today worrying or planning for tomorrow......get out there and live...the world needs ditch diggers too.

In closing I am forced to add one more quote from Sir Winston.

Don't talk to me about naval tradition. It's nothing but rum, sodomy and the lash.
Sir Winston Churchill

obama watch

WASHINGTON -- President Barack Obama issued a withering critique Thursday of Wall Street corporate behavior, calling it "the height of irresponsibility" for employees to be paid more than $18 billion in bonuses last year while their crumbling financial sector received a bailout from taxpayers. "It is shameful," Obama said from the Oval Office. "And part of what we're going to need is for the folks on Wall Street who are asking for help to show some restraint, and show some discipline, and show some sense of responsibility."

a couple of things here.....it's dangerous when you generalize, i learnt that in grade school. I am not sure whom the President is referring to when he speaks to "Wall Street" . My geuss is he is referring to the handful of Banks that will be / are receiving the Tarp Funds, not the majority of individuals in the securities trading industry. Secondly ...Bonus.....like bailout...it's a misleading moniker tossed around by the lazy media who can't waste their time to go into an in depth explanation, so they attach a catchy adjective to sum it up. The Neanderthal phenomunum...I can't read, so someone tell what's happening , and make it quick...it is what gave birth to talk radio, the height of laziness, I don't have a worthwhile thought in my brain so i tune into the radio to hear other people discuss what's happening in the world for me...
Bonus is actually deferred compensation outlined at the the beginning of the year. So in other words if your contract states you make X , you really receive 75% of X in a monthly stipend and the remaining 25% in a lump sum at year end. Not much different than the Union contracts that state you earn X an hour ....or X 1/2 if it's holiday in the ukraine, or X times 2 if it's a weekend , or you get the point.

to summarize, when times are tough we should show some restraint or sense or responsibility and give back some of your deferred compensation. SOOOOO using that same logic, if a techer reports to school everyday but at the end of the year little Sasha still can't do long division , that teacher should surrender some pay.....and if the city workers bust their ass all year , but the City is in an operating deficit, they should show some restraint and give it back....or suppose you accept a salary as a Senator and spend the Year traveling the country soliciting votes for a promotion ,. missing all of your senatorial votes, certainly you would give back that salary . So if we can take this president at his word, that's two things to look forward to... Empowering the States to Govern Themselves and financial accountability for "ALL" sectors of the workforce...., I hope this 30 second rant by Obama is indicative of his Presidency and not a nifty sound bite that suits just this situation.....spread the wealth, change is coming.

I work for a private Company , we receive no Federal assistance, my deferred compensation "is" tied to Company profits, my bonus which was outlined in Dec 2007 , was slashed significantly due to no fault of my own.......I purchased my Bar with part of my bonus.....and all I can say is you have not seen "the height of irresponsibility" until you have been at last call at Club Gato.

and NO ....I ain't givin it back.......car 54 where are you ?

Obama Watch

On Monday, President Barack Obama directed the Environmental Protection Agency to reconsider a waiver request by California and 13 other states to set standards on auto emissions – including those of greenhouse gases – that are tougher than federal standards.....Interesting....so the Candidiate for change is not saying that the national standard s/b raised, but rather he is asking the EPA to consider allowing individual states to set their own higher standards
....a few things here.....if it works , obama is a hero , the tree huggers love him...what a visionary....if it ends up destroying the automobile industry in those states because they cannot either meet the standard on time or it costs too much to make the new cars, if hundreds of thousands of automobile workers loose their Jobs because wackos like Califorinia set unrealistic standards...well then that's the EPA's problem, not obamas....teflon.

More importantly...am I to have the audacity to hope that this will be a common theme for this administration? that individual States will be allowed to govern themselves and not be subject to the Federal Standard? That an alliance of 13 states can actually stray from under big brothers thumb ?

The World Wonders....

What if next month those 13 states decide that they want to toughen the federal laws with relation to performing abortions ? IE deciding for themselves when life begins instead of having the Federal Govts standard forced down their collective throats? Will Obama ask the Surgeon General to "reconsider" a waiver request to allow these 13 states to prohibit abortions after the first trimester?

Time will Tell.

Egypt Dead....

Don Sanderson

Not sure if anyone has heard this story , it has been talked about a lot on the NHL Network, and finally today was reported in the NY Daily News.

WHITBY, Ontario - Those who loved Don Sanderson spoke with the distant, glassy eyes of surprised mourners as they downed beers on a snowy, subzero night and remembered their son, friend, coach and teammate. Sanderson died on Jan. 2, 20 days after banging his head on the ice during a hockey fight. The Whitby Dunlops, his senior-league club team, hosted a tribute to the 21-year-old before a game on Saturday. It began in the late afternoon with drinks and climaxed on the ice, when at the end of a 35-minute ceremony Sanderson's mother Dahna fell, sobbing, into her ex-husband's shoulder.

"He was a very passionate young man," Michael Sanderson says about his son earlier in the evening. Michael Sanderson is tall, with an imposing voice, though losing his only child has left him wobbly and dazed. "It was also his passion that caused him the most trouble."

Don Sanderson's fire for hockey and life led him to work harder than any of his teammates. In training camp, he ran up and down the steps of the rink before the others had begun stretching; he earned high grades at York University while coaching girls' youth hockey with his father. His plan, which he pursued doggedly, was to become a high-school teacher and eventually a professional hockey coach.

His fire also made him an aggressive defenseman who earned four ejections for fighting in 11 games this season, his first with Whitby. His last fight began as a mild scuffle next to the Dunlops' goal with the Brantford Blast's Corey Fulton. A normal hockey fight, replete with a couple of inconsequential punches thrown by both players, is how Sanderson's teammates described the altercation, adding that they thought Fulton had done nothing dirty. Towards the end of the scuffle, Sanderson's helmet slipped off and he stumbled from Fulton's grip, his head crashing against the ice. He lost conciousness soon after and lapsed into a coma for nearly three weeks before dying.

Attempts to reach Fulton were unsuccessful, but Whitby players confirmed that Fulton did not remove Sanderson's helmet.

Sanderson had told his father the day before that the helmet was worn out and needed to be replaced. "I told him Christmas was coming, wait until then," says Michael, with a laugh raw with regret.

***

Though the pall of the first hockey-fight death that anyone can remember hung heavily in the bar, and later on the ice that night, the fallout has not been contained to Whitby. The tragedy has reverberated across Canada, instigating a prolonged debate about the role of fighting in the national sport. Print media, television and the Internet are abuzz with the issue. A poll conducted last week by Sun Media, which owns 43 major newspapers in Canada, revealed that 59% of respondents felt that fighting should be banned in minor and amateur hockey. One top junior league has already reacted with a rule change, and National Hockey League commissioner Gary Bettman felt it necessary to weigh in.

Oh What a Beautiful Morning !

The Cat is Back In Santa Anita today

El Gato Malo is racing today @ Santa Anita....did someone say simulcast ?

El Gato Malo makes his third start since winning last year’s Lone Star Derby (gr. III) in the $150,000 San Fernando Stakes (gr. II) Jan. 17, part of a graded stakes triple-header at Santa Anita. The beaten favorite in the Santa Anita Derby (gr. I) is part of a wide open field of a dozen 4-year-olds in the 1 1/16-mile test over the Pro-Ride racing surface.

Trained by Craig Dollase, El Gato Malo is the 122-pound highweight in the second leg of the Strub series. His primary competition appears to be a pair of turf runners -- Oak Tree Derby (gr. IIT) winner Muny and Del Mar Derby (gr. IIT) victor Madeo -- as well as Swaps Stakes (gr. II) winner Tres Borrachos and Booted, a son of A.P. Indy who will be making his stakes debut following a pair of impressive comeback victories.

Original Six ? or original 30 pack ?

Band of Brothers

the below article first appeared www.bloodhorse.com

Horse racing's most famous sibling is about to get his first test. The bay colt Nicanor, the full brother of Barbaro, is nearing his debut, an occasion that will begin to answer a question that has hovered over him since shortly after his birth: Will he, too, be a star?

His trainer, Michael Matz, who also trained Barbaro, says Nicanor should be ready for his first race by late January or early February and will begin his career at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Florida. Matz is not sure how good the 3-year-old Nicanor will be, but he is optimistic that he has a bright future.

"I think he's a real nice colt, and we've always thought that of him," Matz said. "He's been working quite good. It was just that he needed some time to grow up mentally. He's a real nice horse."

I try to be nice

you know it really pains me sometimes.....I try to be nice....I root for my team although I really wish some years everyones team could win, it would be so nice to see Jet fans celebrating a Championship , and what do ai get in return ? mean spirited emails like the one below:

Tom,

I hope you enjoyed watchin the eagles kick your giants out of the playoffs....me and Jimi Polis were doing shots in Pippins toasting Philadelphia.....it sure took the sting out of the Jets missing the playoffs. I hope Billy Garry served fatty steaks and your beer was warm too. I hope you, Hoffman nad Caddotte cried all the way home.

signed your sworn enemy
Brian P Duffy
.

thaw

in the frozen tundra of the meadowlands, the ice thawed momentarily.....donzo would later stae that shakin hands with the dudester "sank" any chances the giants had of winning.....

plans?

it's bad enough that plankowners like myself and my head linesman could not attend, but when one of the founding fathers was working, it should have been rescheduled....i know, i know, plans are plans.....even evil hubris plans must be followed until the death...

the world revolves around Roll......and his 36% attendance rate.

bring on the cardinals....i mean, bring on baltusROLL......

GOOOOOOOOOOO GIANTS !

what the hell happened down in carolina last night ? the Cardinals are riding high...two playoff wins in a row.....the world must be coming to end......hopefully that meteor doesn't obliterate the earth before the Giants dispacth of the Eagles...

SEC Rules

No , No, No ....not the Securities and Exchange Commission.....they suck.......we're talking Southeastern Conference Football.....

If you ain't a gator........your gator Bait !

CHOMP >>>>>CHOMP>>>>>>CHOMP>>>>>>

in reality though....this game should have been played on New Years day....and how hard would it be to then get USC and Florida together for one more game this weekend?

in hindsight, the big twelve was not very impressive in their bowl games though.
Oklahoma. Oklahoma St and Texas Tech lost.....The Longhorns had to rally past Ohio St and Mizzou had to go into OT to beat Northwestern....

the weak Pac 10 by comparison posted wins from Oregon, Oregon St, Arizona, California and of course the men of Troy....

I think Fla is the best team in the nation....do I think USC could beat them ? absolutely.....the best teams don't always win in a plyoff format either....sometimes it comes down to matchups....Team A owns team B , but can't beat C.......team C can't beat team B .....and around we go.......starting to sound like a Brett Favre press conf........sad how Jet nation has kicked such an NFL Icon to the Curb....there a lesson to be learned for future free agents.....do you really want to wear the Green ?

Nice to see that the lil sandwhich Boy found a job in Cleveland....makes sense , he coached there before...he still remembers all the best delis..ham and swiss on rye is the first order of business.

Arthurs trip has been pushed back to a Midnight start to accomodate Steve Mac and any insomniacs that wish to join the crew.......may have to bring flash photography to capture the group shot this year....sun goes down at 4:30.

3 hours too many

so Isreal took the foot off the pedal for 3 hours yesterday to allow humanitarian aide......mistake.....those trucks loaded with supplies were probably hijaked by Hamas and the medicine and food was either sold to their own people or used by themselves. ....Humanatarian aide indicates that the receiver of said aid is Human...Hamas is not.....they are filthy miscreants from the time before man evolved to his current state.........sometimes you have to cut through all the nonsense and bring it down to its simplest of forms......The goals of the United Staes are more in line with the Ehud Olmerts of this world than they are with the MaQtadr Al Sadrs.

The Isrealis , for all their faults , want the same things we do....peace and prosperity....money and luxury.....they spend their time trying to upgrade and improve time spent on earth.....they drink beer ( Maccabee), play sports , gamble , frequent strip clubs and WORK !

the Moslems want to hold women back and abolish higher learning......ok so they are not all bad.....just kidding.....they wish to turn the global clock back a few hundred years , they pray for our destruction and are willing to kill themselves if it also means killing a few of us......the majority are ignorant peasents who are being manipultaed by the "Holy Men" ........they are not fighting for religous freedom....they are fighting to take away your right to practice your religous beliefs.........and they don't drink.....Case Open ( I never say case closed...it gives me the shivers)

The President Elect says he has plenty to say on the Gaza crisis....after Jan 20th.

lets just hope all his jibberish on the campaign trail about sitting down and talking to our enemies was just that...nonsense force fed to please the liberal left....truth be told I would be dissapointed to see obama blindfoled and have his head chopped off by hamas on the AlJazeera video of the week.

as Gen Patton....

I don't want to hear any crap about us holding our position...we're not holding anything...we'll let the Hun do that....we are advancing all the time , we're gonna go through them like Crap through a Goose...we're gonna murder those lousy Hun Bastards by the bushel.

Amen I say to you....Amen

We can only hope that Hezbollah joins the party.......

Amen I say to you...Amen

This is the Op Ed piece on the nY Post 1/7/08 ...if your not reading the Post everyday , YOU are part of the problem....Amen

Add one more atrocity to the blood- soaked history of Hamas: Yesterday, the cowardly brotherhood managed to kill dozens of Palestinian civilians at a UN school in Gaza.

And it used Israeli armor to get the job done.

Israeli tanks, it's true, fired on the school, which the UN says it operated as a refuge for civilians - but only after coming under fire from the school.

Indeed, Israeli soldiers reportedly found dead Hamas fighters and their weapons in the building's rubble, along with the bodies of scores of civilians, as the ground assault against Hamas positions outside Gaza City continued.

No surprise there.

Heavy civilian casualties would be entirely in keeping with Hamas' longstanding practice of using women, children and the elderly as human shields.

Which means that responsibility for the deaths lies squarely at their feet.

The contrast couldn't be greater: Israel has taken all steps to avoid civilian casualties, including extensive leafletting and sending text messages to Palestinians near its Hamas targets, while Hamas seems bent on seeing as many of its own people as possible die.

There is a purpose to such barbarism.

Recall that similar civilian casualties - precipitated by similar enemy cowardice - helped bring international pressure against Israel to prematurely end its war against Hezbollah in 2006.

Hamas, and its paymasters in Tehran, are hoping for a similar outcome this time around. That musn't be allowed.

Indeed, Hamas' willingness to terrorize its own people, let alone Israeli civilians, is all the more reason for Israel to effect the organization's speedy destruction - and for the world to support such an outcome.

And, lest anyone forget Hamas' ultimate intentions, a spokesman yesterday called on Islamists to target Jewish children around the world.

"They have legitimized the murder of their own children by killing the children of Palestine," he said.

That's about as evil, and cowardly, a statement as they come - even if it weren't so preposterous.

New Years Memories

one of my oddest recollections of New Years Eve came in November of 1984. Myself and Steve Mac spent an 8 hour shift in O'Keefes (nee Remson Street & Court). Mac was enrolled at Kingsborough but decided to spend the Day in Terrier land....I had already dropped out of college and was just looking to put a Tuesday afternoon Bag on as opposed to reporting to work at My Plastic Factory job on Smith and 9th ( Henry J Fuchs & Son).

so me and crackerjack spent the day drinking pitchers of BEER and watching the Price Is Right and reading the NY Post and awaiting wayward strangers from the College of Knowledge to happenstance by.....around 4:00 we decided to head back to the Ridge...I opted to take my indestructible MUG with me as i left....we stopped at the deli on Court....this was the golden Age of Brooklyn, Before Bodegas became part of our vernacular.........yesiree delis........we picked up a six of Bud Pint Cans for the short trek to 209 and got on the subway........of course both being 7 sheets to the wind we got on a train headed in the opposite direction.....Whitehall Street should have been our first clue that we were going the wrong way , but it was not until Rector Street that we figured it out......upon departing the train i made the ill suited decision to punch the train window for going the wrong way....luckily I chose the hand that was holding a mug of Anhausers finest and the window shattered..i still bare a tiny scar under my right thumb.....

so now we are still carrying a few cans of beer and I am bleeding profusely all over my nice white ND Sweatshirt that Mike Gilmore from the DAC had given me, and we emrge from the subway caverns onto Church Street......rather than crossing that mammouth street and getting back on a train headed home , we instead decided to have a few pops on the Isle of Manhattan.....we were strangely turned away by two public houses , they told us there were private parties going on .......PRIVATE PARTIES ?

Mac deduced that it must be New Years Eve if there were private parties going on ......so we stood by the cemetery gates of Trinity church at 5:00 in the evening on or about November 1st and we drank a beer , sang Auld Lang Syne, and toasted the NEW Year......

Ah Memories.......

we did eventually make it to Slapsticks and eventually Fanuks , i was administered first aide by a lovely young lady who probably would rather i not mention her by name in this blog, and we ALL celebrated New years......well not everyone, but me and Mac kept wishing everybody Happy New Years.....but in November of 1984....for me and Mac....that wasn't all that strange

The hockey Chanel

oh the gang at Sweater nite 11 headquarters were dancin in the aisles this past weekend when we gleefully discovered that Verizon had added channel # 587 to it's ever evolving reportoire ....THE HOCKEY CHANNEL.........24/7 Hockey in high Def.....old games...lost footage....Hockey Nite in Canada......and the World Junior Championships that are going on as we type.......Yesterday our Kids from Team USA , lead by CBA product John Van Reimsdyk , took on the Canadians.....

The US raced out to a 3-0 lead before the game was twelve minutes young, but the pesky Canucks fought back to draw even before first intermission. The game was packed with energy and a little fisticuffs, not a full fledged brawl by Sweater Nite standards, but a nice skirmish by the benches after Canada tied the score.

Our neighbors to the North would eventually take a 5-4 advantage into the closing minutes of play . Team USA swarmed and setup two high quality scoring chances from in front, but alas it was not to be. The Frog cousins tacked on two empy netters to seal the 7-4 triumph......BUT hopefully we get another crack at them in the medal round.

For Canada struggles they earned a bye to the semis, while we must tangle with the Slovaks in the quarters......ask no quarter and give none, That;s what the marines say.....we shall see...

Go USA...fight on for another day.
