Champions Pass

Two more Champions passed this past week, Lil E. Tee ; winner of the 1992 Derby
and ALYSHEBA winner of the first two legs in 1987 took their leave from this earth to greener pastures and stables of the great beyond.

Steve Mcevoy and the Chairman both gained riches from Lil E. Tee's victory by plucking his name in the two Derby pools that were offered in the Ridegbay Pub that first Saturday in May 1992 ........as Donnie pointed out , a Delicious feast was held in the aftermath at Polska on 3rd... home of the Bring Yer Own Borscht.

To these two fine Champions we say adios amigo, thanks for the Memories.

for the record, I unfortunately never paid a visit to the window compliments of these two...

Quality Win

If you were lucky enough to watch the F L A Derby yesterday , you may have seen something that will earn you a few dollars down the Road (Quality Road that is) .......Dunkirk caught the field and pulled even with the leader "Quality Road" coming off the final turn , looked like he was gonna blow right by em all.......But then Quality Road looked em in the eye and said goodnight , pulling away in grand style to win the Floridian Derby....look for the replay today if you missed the live action...it was impressive.

What was not impressive was the sour grapes that Todd Pletcher showed in the Post Race interview , crying about the ultrafast condition of the track and bemoaning that he would have gone to the Big A if he had known......his steed Dunkirk now sits on the bubble of qualifying for the KY Derby.

The Swale stakes ended in a DQ for the first time in its 24 year history as Desormaux and Coa bumped twice down the stretch, the stewards took down Coa.....but it was the correct call.

Jerry Bailey , Hand Goldberg and a few others gave their top 5 for the Derby yesterday and Midshipmen was nowhere to be seen.........also missing was MR Baffert and Pioneer of the Nile....not sure what that is all about...

next Saturday we have the Wood, The Santa Anita and the Illinois......we should learn a lot.

disturbing ...but not surprising

The story below that the Post and the News trumpeted yesterday about the dropping of the name "Freedom Tower" from the rebuilt World Trade Center site is disturbing....it represents the bleaching and white washing of our collective memories....just like the dropping of the phrase "Global war on terror" and replacing it with overseas contingency effort...(that's no joke)

As Bob Weir would say " Just cause you say it...that don't mean that it;s so"

I would like to say that you can't just change a name of something , or stop using a phrase to project a better image....BUT YOU CAN...because as a nation we are not just willing to forget , but we Are Eager to do so.....less than 65 years ago we were in the throws of global war , attacked by the Japs in the Pacific, Planning the largest land invasion in history in the Atlantic , an entire generation of men gave their lives for FREEDOM....what % of Americans reflect on that ? no not daily of course, but how many even give it a fleeting thought or say a Hail Mary for the dead on "Memorial Day"

After September 11th we tossed around a silly phrase of "Never Forget" ....put it on T-shirts , bumper stickers, beer coozies et al .......it's just talk , just a phrase...don't take it seriously , the gentrification of our History is well in place, soon that day will be surrounded by adjectives that suggest outcomes other than Murder......you see it already...."Tragic Events" "Lost their lives".....earthquakes and tsunamis are tragedies...not this.

I personally could not care less what they call the new building , I won't swell with pride if it carries the moniker "Freedom Tower" , but I do have a problem with them reusing that address of One World Trade Center .......that exists no more....that place is gone forever..that title should be retired out of respect for the dead if nothing else....

NEW YORK — The Freedom Tower is out. One World Trade Center is in.

The agency that owns ground zero confirmed Thursday that the signature skyscraper replacing the towers destroyed on Sept. 11 will be more commonly known as One World Trade Center.

The building under construction at the site was named the Freedom Tower in the first ground zero master plan. Officials at the time said the tallest, most symbolic of five planned towers at the site would demonstrate the country's triumph over terrorism.

Port Authority of New York and New Jersey chairman Anthony Coscia says the agency refers to the building as One World Trade Center. He says it's the building's legal name and "the one that's easiest for people to identify with."

Fountain of Youth Stakes

does everybody out there in TV land realize just how close we are to DERBY Day ?

don't all answer at once.

your probably too busy watching the Big East Tourney...I mean the NCAA's....sure looks like th e Big East though.

anyhoodles.....later today (it is 3:00 am as we speak) we Luv Dunkirk in the FLA Derby.....with an exacta pairing with theregoesjojo......race will be shown live on TRV at 5:44 ......free money I say.

move on

so that madcap funnyman david letterman runs a skit last night , the title is teleprompter Vs no teleprompter....funny stuff.....he shows an eloquent obama speaking a mistake free sentence and calls that segment teleprompter.......and then he shows footage of former President Bush bumbling and stumbling over his words...and of course that segment is no teleprompter.....yuk, yuk.

and the beat goes on......now that the President is off limits by their own choosing , these funnymen have lost more than half their material , but that won't stop them , they will continue to make the Bush Administration the butt of their jokes.....

remember all the one liners about the economy during the campaign by lettermen, leno, kimmel etc etc....not anymore....only the president can joke about the current state of affairs

maybe this is what they meant by transparency and change.

Slainte`

vayos con dios lads, A Hearty Laugh, a wistful tear, a cold beer, may your day be complete.

If you ever go across the sea to Ireland,
Then maybe at the closin' of your day
You will sit and watch the moon rise over Claddagh
And see the sun go down on Galway Bay.
[And if there's to be a life in the hereafter --
And somehow I'm sure there's going to be --
I will ask my God to let me make my heaven
In that dear land across the Irish sea.

fool on the hill

only a jackalope von judy would dare make a bold derby prediction prior to Saint Padriqs Day , but what else am I gonna blog about on a rainy sundee morn ?

so here goes....

I see a triumvirate of of champions distancing themselves from a pack of wannabees as they arch around the final turn and head for home ....nose to nose , neck to neck, and down the stretch they come....Pioneer of the Nile, Friesan Fire and of course Midshipmen......battleing to the wire and at the wire it's ?

obviously too soon to tell......

Gato 2012

get ready cause here comes some free advice ( r.weir)

in an effort to stimulate the economy I propse that the Fed Govt offer a tax incentive to first time homebuyers.......offer them a fixed rate at 3% mortgage , match their downpayment at 25 cents to the dollar up to 100,000 , but tie that to occupancy and ownership, in other words if they rent out or sell this property before 10 years they have to give back the Govt assistance........one more caveat....they have to purchase a home that is currently in foreclosure....this more than ayhting will help the banks.....if they can get bad loans off their books, replaced by good loans, even at a discount, and reduce their inventory of homes ...it would be win/win.....more importantly ....you and I would not really be hurt by this....it would represent a pittance of what govt is currently giving away.

The people that would be hurt are the folks who are trying to sell their homes now, but eventually this will help them too.....right now there are tooo many homes on the market..

Ahhhhh Spring

Like an army defeated
The snow hath retreated,
And now doth fare ill
On the top of the bare hill;
The ploughboy is whooping--anon--anon:
There's joy in the mountains;
There's life in the fountains;
Small clouds are sailing,
Blue sky prevailing;
The rain is over and gone! W. Wordsworth

and so with Sweater Nite and the birthday season safely behind us, we move on to the wonderful season of Derby Preps, March Madness and the NHL stretch....how delightful that the Lords of Summer have chosen this day to preview their works...makes you want to run out the door and scramble down the shore, drink beer with a cheer and raise the Dead....or at the very least , guzzle a glass of ale while lsitening to uncle Jerry on the juke box........the sun is rising , it is going to be a splendid Day

in the Gotham stakes we like Mr Fantasy ( Coa & Pletcher) , but do not rule out Axel Foley.

April 11th....the Bluegrass Stakes could mark the first appearance on North American soil since hiis Juvee win at the Breeders for "MIDSHIPMEN"......and would it not be fitting if former trainer, the one and only Mr Bullet Bob Baffert where waiting in the wings with the Pioneer of the Nile ?

one can only hope for a good seat in Club Gato for that one.

Theres a Darkness of the Edge of SpoonyTown

they say the darkest is hour is just before the dawn,
but that little quip belies the fact that it's also pretty effin Dark at midnight.

translation......we got a long, LONG, way to go ......and it may not get worser (bayridge phonics word) but don't hold yer breath for that daylight.

secondly ....how many chaps died during the cold war , only to have their sacrifices erased by this current "quid -pro-quo" with the Russians..........heres an alternative.....end your support of Iran or we'll pump a stimulus pakage worth of doe into building the sheild.......and then we can resume the chat.

I'll say it again.....Nemchinov was the only decent russian of the past 100 years....

Quality , if not quantity.

Years from now we shall look back on 2009 as the winter of our economic discontent, and nowhere was the pain of this reality felt nore than @ the eleventh installment of Sweater Nite. but with shrinking numbers also comes a renewed vigor on behalf of those that trudged through a 65 degree rainshower to get to Terrapin. What we may have lacked in volumne we made up for in spirit , and when I think of those that would probably trade anything for one more day on earth to attend a social gathering, I am even more grateful to those who made the 11 so special.

God Speed and following Seas.
